Many punters often ask: what are the best online platforms for placing bets on horse racing in the UK?
There are so many on offer that it’s hard to decide how to choose one — which site offers the best coverage and odds, which app is most comfortable to use. Here, with 35 years of experience of racing both as an on-course bookmaker, racing trader and a professional punter, I take a look at the top bookmakers for betting on UK racing.
Here is our complete betting guide to UK online horse racing.
Best UK Racing Betting Sites: Stephen Harris’s Top Picks
1. Matchbook Exchange
Rating: 9/10

The Matchbook Betting Exchange burst onto the market in 2017 with the development of a high-tech, state of the art website, and have made great strides since in challenging the dominance of the market leader Betfair. They have been aggressive in their marketing in a bid to attract the much needed liquidity that any exchange needs to grow and thrive, and are rapidly replacing Betdaq as the serious challenger in a very competitive and cutthroat industry.
They have a big marketing budget and have used it cleverly, both with “commision free” offers on racing and in their sponsiorship of some of the biggest race meetings in the calendar such as the Goodwood festival in the past. A recent launch of their “prediction markets” site in 2026 has also attracted a lot of interest among punters, though it is relatively early days with regard to racing bets.
Racing Markets and Liquidity
Matchbook exchange racing offer a comprehensive range of bets, with win and place, alongside forecast and occasional matchbets on selected big races. They are not up overnight on most racing, but the markets are extremely thin anyway these days at an early stage and most of the action/bigger liquidity takes place when the markets are more established very close to the off time.
All the big ante-post races are up months in advance and the liquidity is in reasonable size, with a growing number of big-hitting players in the UK and Ireland being enticed by very attractive rates of Matchbook commision on their wagers (in 2018 Matchbook racing offered “commision free” wagers for several months which covered both the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals). This remarkable offer proved extremely popular and has seen a massive surge in the liquidity available on horse racing markets (and has obviously attracted the big hitters needed to make exchange betting on horse racing viable for smaller players too).
The exchange section offers all the bets you would expect of a leading racing exchange, with separate win and place markets that closely match the prices available elsewhere, and certainly close to the racetime there is significant depth in the markets to accomodate the bigger players aswell as more recreational punters. At the moment it is not possible to do multiple bets combining your selections (that is available on the Betfair Sportsbook for example), but there is now reasonable liquidity for “in-running” betting on racing (which was always one of the big attractions of a betting exchange over the more traditional bookmakers).
Live Streaming
Live Streaming is excellent for all racing on Matchbook, and completely free of charge (no need to have a bet)….and the app is extremely good for being largely glitch-free (unlike Betdaq for example which frequently still crashes and causes white-screens when navigating around the site).
One of the most attractive offers from the Matchbook exchange bookmaker is their zero commision on racing over a sustained period in 2018 (and this offer has occasionally been repeated on big racing events unto the present day in 2026). This has definitely dramatically improved the crucial liquidity and turnover on racing markets, and has attracted some big player over from their more established rivals.
The normal Matchbook commision is based on turnover rather than profitability (like their main rival betfair), but it is likely that this new competitor in the market will continue to reduce the charges in a bid to attract punters over to their site.
Matchbook Mobile App
The app marks the Matchbook exchange racing as one of the leader in its field, with superb technology and a very clean and easy to use interface for placing bets. The colours on the horse racing exchange are similar to their main rival, with blue for backing on the left and pink for laying on the right, and the bet acceptance and confirmation process is extremely straghtforward on the Mobile App.
Depositing and withdrawing is a speedy and safe process, and the Matchbook Racing Exchange has led the way in fast withdrawals that now rival leading conventional bookmakers like Skybet (funds back into your bank account within an hour or two).
Conclusion
Matchbook racing burst onto the exchange scene and made a massive impact in under ten years, with large numbers of punters attracted over from rival Betfair, enticed by attractive commision rates and a modern, slick and reliable website and Mobile app. This “new” Exchange bookmaker are aggressively competing with their established rival in a way not seen before, and their marketing department are certainly one of the best in the business.
They produce a weekly Matchbook Betting Podcast which discusses the weekends racing in-depth with a range of experts, and remain an essential tool in any racing punters armoury. Overall the Matchbook racing exchange has been a welcome breath of fresh air into an arena that had become something of a staid monopoly for Betfair, and they are particularly focussed on racing especially in a bid to generate the required liquidity to make racing exchanges viable for backer and layer.
2. William Hill
Rating: 8/10

William Hill is one of the biggest bookmakers in the world and has a good reputation as one of the strongest horse racing bookmakers, with their large number of betting shops and rapidly growing online presence dominant in a competitive landscape. They are one of the leaders in ante-post betting, offering competitive prices on all the major future races along with a big sponsorship programme that makes them a household name in the UK and across Europe.
The William Hill horse racing coverage is among the most comprehensive available, often going up with odds that bookmaking industry follows. They offer horse racing prices on every race every day, with early prices up in the morning of racing and a full range of multiple bets that you would expect both online and in the shops. Best Odds Guaranteed is available to recreational punters online (where if the SP is greater than the price you have taken then the punter gets the SP). They also offer match-bets (upto six on the bigger races), and a broad range of Daily Specials such as distance betting, favourites and jockey challenges, plus the ability to bet into Tote pools for Jackpots, placepots etc.
Racing Markets and Bet Types
William Hill horse racing offer every single bet possible on horse racing, whether it is win or each-way (with standard place terms applied throughout the off-course industry), or a range of multiple bets from trixies, patents, yankees, lucky15s, goliath etc etc. They offer standard off-course place terms (particularly good value when offering 1/4 the odds a place 1,2,3,4 in 16 or more runner handicaps/or Group/Graded races), they offer the smaller staking horse racing punter the chance to win large sums for relatively small stakes.
The ability to use William Hill racing bookmakers shops is also useful to the astute punter, and they have very high bet limits on their multiple bets that smaller horse racing bookmakers cannot match. The bonuses frequently added to these multiples can make them an attractive proposition for the recreational smaller staking Saturday punter who likes to play on the major televised races.
Live Streaming
Whether you are backing William Hill racing tips that are available on their website, William Hill live streaming means you never need to miss a race you have placed a bet in (whether it is via desktop or on the William Hill Mobile app). Their live streaming is now completely free for horse racing, and the quality of the commentary alongside it is the best in the business.
William Hill racing are very competitive in their prices for Saturday’s main races and at the big horse racing Festivals such as Cheltenham, Royal Ascot and the York Dante meeting in summer. During busy periods they are often up competitively with their unique prices on horse racing tomorrow, without relying on the betting exchanges to to guide them, and have been known to take opinions against horses and lay them in large size on the major races like the Grand National or Cheltenham Gold Cup.
William Hill also have one of the most generous opening account offers that vary from time to time but often match deposits or offer free bets in very fair size to the new punter on horse racing.
William Hill Mobile App
The App is one of the slickest in the industry, with cutting edge technology making it very easy to navigate and find the horse racing selection and wagers you are looking for with the minimum of fuss. It is also easy to view the William Hills live-streaming, check out the latest horse racing results or place large stake multiple bets in the simplest fashion.
Overall the Mobile App does provide an excellent punting experience across the board. Placing a bet is straightforward and there are none of the annoying pop-ups that can slow down the betting process with some of their horse racing bookmaker rivals, so the horse racing punter can easily place his bets (with some of the biggest bet limits in the industry on unrestricted recreational accounts).
Conclusion
William Hills racing provide a top class service and are well established as a big bookmaker you can trust. With their huge shop base they have in the past perhaps not had to compete with more go-ahead internet rivals for the punters pound (often betting to bigger margins and not having to attract new business).
This has changed in recent years however with the development of their top of the range website and superb Mobile App, both now provide a comprehensive range of betting opportunities for horse racing punters keen to follow the sport. The offer of Best Odds Guaranteed is a great tool for the punter, while their huge limits on multiple bets is another big positive for those seeking a life-changing big win.
3. Bet365 Racing
Rating: 8/10

The Bet365 Group was founded in 2001 by Denise Coates, and with reportedly over 35 million customers it is one of the most recognised online-only gambling companies. Offering sports and casino betting and specialising in a huge number of sports markets, they have rapidly become one of the biggest online bookmakers in the world.
Bet365 are headquartered in Stoke-On-Trent, UK with offices in Manchester, Gibraltar, Malta, Bulgaria and Australia. Winning eGaming Reviews ‘Operator of the Year’ in 2010, ranked third in the The Sunday Times ‘Profit Track 100’ league table, and also ranked as one of the fastest growing privately owned tech, media and telecoms companies. In 2013 founder Denise Coates was named as one of the most powerful women in the UK by the BBC’s R4, although in 2026 the growth of Bet365 seems to be slowing down with rumours of a sale pretty rife across the industry.
Bet365 is known for offering a huge number of betting markets including all international sports, major and minor leagues (football, racing, rugby, golf, motorsport, boxing) globally, and also esports betting, casino, poker and bingo.
Live Streaming and In-Play Betting
Live-streaming (although only available in some countries, and with a funded and active account), and were one of the pioneers of in-play betting and are pretty dominant here as a result. Like other firms they also offer a ‘bet builder’ so players can create their own bets by selecting your markets and Bet365 calculating the odds. All in all, impressive stuff, and recreational racing punters are catered for supremely well.
Racing Markets and Odds
Bet365 are an essential account for any UK racing punter to have. They offer a full range of racing markets on every race in the UK every day, and crucially are always up first the day before with prices for the next day’s racing (this can be something of a bun fight for small stakes the night before, with bet size limited). This can throw up some terrific value if you are able to take advantage.
Their ante-post betting markets are also comprehensive, and crucially they are braver than most with their prices on fancied contenders in the biggest races. There is also an option to bet on the Tote through Bet365, allowing punters to play into daily jackpot and placepot options which can offer terrific value on major meetings like the Cheltenham Festival.
Bet365 offers very competitive odds across all markets, and horse racing markets in particular with their ‘Price Promise’ for all races shown on ITV Racing. Like most other firms the weekend odds are more aggressive, as the market fluctuates with more attention from punters to weekend racing. There are plenty of special offers too, although they are not as prominently flagged as some of Bet365’s competitors. A huge number of match bets on every race every day is another big plus that the astute racing punter can take advantage of.
Bet365 Mobile App
The Bet365 website and mobile app are a hugely popular feature and have traditionally led the industry. With a very simple interface, easy navigation meaning that punters get to dig right into the markets they want to quickly. It is really easy to familiarise yourself with the site with its clean colour palette and the left-hand menu lists the sports clearly.
Users are able to bookmark favourite selections and we find the site pages have quick loading times. The in-play section is also excellent with clear graphics and up to date information and useful statistics. Some of the great content and form tools are hidden away in the footer, but otherwise there is little to fault. The ‘bet slip’ is also extremely good meaning you can place any combination of bets with ease.
Mirroring the site functionality and navigation the mobile app is also a winner. Since they began Bet365 have got the website absolutely right, leaving behind older more established shop-based bookmakers who were very slow to adapt to the new “internet age” of betting.
Transactions are quick and easy with Bet365, with the usual deposit and withdrawal facilities you would expect with a major bookmaker — all related information can be found in the footer, per function. Bet365 sets a withdrawal minimum of £5 and a maximum of £100,000. Winning limits for horse racing within a 24hr period is £1,000,000 and the Bet365 maximum bet is notably higher at £25,000 than many other bookmakers out there.
All in all, Bet365 housekeeping is very efficient, and unrestricted accounts are able to play far bigger than most other online firms (particularly in horse racing where their turnover dwarfs all other companies with the exception of Skybet).
Conclusion
Bet365 have the best app in the business and offer the widest range of racing prices, employing more traders than any other firm and keeping the website uptodate and fresh. For a recreational racing punter they are the best firm out there to have an account with, though for more professional players they can be every quick to restrict stake size (particularly if the punter regularly beats the market i.e take a bigger price than the final SP).
4. BetVictor
Rating: 7/10

The company was originally founded in 1946 by the family bookmaking dynasty the Chandler’s, BetVictor has become one of Europe’s leading online gaming firms. After the death of William Chandler in 1946, the business was passed on to his five sons, with Charles and Percy managing Walthamstow Stadium whilst the bookmaking business passed to Victor Sr. and Jack. Trading under the name Victor Chander until 2012 and originally a sportsbook, it has evolved to offer players the chance to wager online on all major sports, BetVictor poker and casino games.
BetVictor still has a strong profile in UK racing, with the legacy of their racecourse pitches on-course across the UK still fresh in the memory of older punters like myself.
Racing Markets and Coverage
BetVictor operates in all major worldwide betting markets and covers all the events you would expect from the mainstream horse racing, football, rugby, greyhounds, cricket, golf & darts to more niche markets. They also have a good reputation for unusual wagers in entertainment, politics and virtual/esports.
Experienced punters might find the lack of in-depth markets on individual games a bit lacking in comparison to some other bookmakers like 365 or Skybet. At just over 40 markets available worldwide (with both pre and in-play betting) particularly in the football and horse racing markets, there is still plenty on offer and BetVictor remains one of the go-to firms on the market.
There are a large range of horse racing markets available at BetVictor with a global spread of racecards available, and they are traditionally strong in the ante-post arena where their opinions can be pretty warm. The main focus is British and Irish racing, but you will find US, Australian and Japanese markets on offer too.
Live Streaming
Live streaming is available for both home and international racing events. BetVictor offers wide appeal to the novice punter and pro gambler, with the range of markets available and the exceptional opportunities to place a bet. Whether you like to play small and place a win only wager or play bigger with an accumulator placing a number of combined bets then BetVictor has you covered.
The many different bets are easily discoverable and there is a helpful glossary explaining the terms in the help section. Encouragingly the amount you can get on with the company is generally much bigger than numerous competitors, especially if you tend to be a punter on the Saturday racing or the festivals.
Like many other bookmakers BetVictor claims to offer the best odds — but with their ‘Bet Boost’ product they take things a step further. Users can select this button to check out current markets available with enhanced odds. There are very limited matchbets on offer, rarely more than one a race if at all, and the offering on UK racing has rather been left behind in recent years by competitors like Bet365.
BetVictor Mobile App
BetVictor has earned its place in the industry and they have invested heavily on the user assets such as website, app and account facilities over the last few years. The BetVictor web interface is simple, sleek and reasonably easy to navigate with a simple menu for racing. The clear menu and tab options are logical, and you can easily locate all available sporting events or in-play options with good page loading times.
In some areas though the layout gets a little clunky and there are too many clicks required to get to the information you need (scrolling down to try and find the rare match bets hidden away a gripe of mine). That being said, once familiar with the site it isn’t a big issue. Registration and sign-up is easy and account services secure. Overall, the platform is simple and clear, though lacks the range of prices offered by other rivals on racing.
Conclusion
BetVictor’s longevity in the industry speaks for itself, as does its reputation for fair play and prompt payment without any issues. As you would expect from a leading firm, customer service at BetVictor is very good, with their racing knowledge a lot better on the help-desk than many competitors who outsource these type of things.
The mobile app is good if not outstanding (looks rather old-fashioned in 2026), and their generous sign-up offers demonstrate great value for its customers. BetVictor rate particularly highly if you are a novice gambler because of the tools and resources available to guide you through the process of betting on UK racing.
5. Ladbrokes
Rating: 7/10

A British gambling institution founded by Schwind and Pennington in 1886. The Ladbrokes name was officially adopted in 1892 when the firm moved to London, and their growth has been steady throughout since a relatively small beginning. In 2018 GVC plc acquired Ladbrokes Coral, making them one of the biggest global bookmakers across the world (rebranded as ENTAIN in 2020).
The name is synonymous with gambling has gone on to become one of the leading brands in the industry. They remain the market leader in retail bookmaking in the UK, Ireland and Belgium as well as a major player in the online betting sector, with horse racing traditionally one of their strong points.
Racing Markets and Tools
Ladbrokes historic knowledge in horse racing shows and it ranks as one of the best firms for understanding the needs of their customers. They are strong on international race meetings as well as focusing on the British and Irish racing scene. There is a lot going on and a multitude of racing features all easily accessible from the site and app.
The ‘Build a Racecard’ feature is hugely popular and allows the punter to select any race from either an international or UK & Irish meeting and focus on a bespoke card of races that you want to concentrate on. Here you can also tweak by a particular odds range, form, course winner or distance making your selections easier.
Racing information is top-notch, with numerous sponsorships in racing such as leading trainer Dan Skelton in recent years (with an excellent weekly blog free to read on the site, alongside regular podcasts with excellent horse racing guests).
Live Streaming
Live Streaming is free for British & Irish racing (no need to place a bet to watch it). In the past Ladbrokes were quite opinionated, especially in the ante-post arena, but they tend to avoid going out on a limb these days. The original betting shop model means they have a large number of recreational, smaller stakes punters, and they look after their requirements very well with a terrific range of horse racing prices.
Ladbrokes long-standing expertise in the market means that they are able to offer very competitive odds throughout their markets — with the best odds guaranteed feature a big plus if eligible (means that if an SP returns a bigger price than your original prices, they will pay you at the bigger price). The Ladbrokes Tote offering also includes products such as totePlacepot, Scoop6 and totePlacepot. There are also plenty of boosts and special offers, though they have rather moved away from offering match bets on racing (replaced largely by winning distance bets for various horses).
Ladbrokes Mobile App
Ladbrokes have finally, belatedly invested heavily here (after struggling to compete with similar rivals for many years), and the user experience across the platforms (as you would expect) is now better. With their familiar red & white branding, the website is packed full of great features and plenty of tools and resources which make the user experience fantastic.
It is surprisingly easy to locate the racing market of choice, and ‘bet slip’ and ‘my bets’ tabs to keep you on track. Navigation is logical despite a lot of content and page transitions and loading times are quick. There is no doubt the app has been much improved, though there is still a bit of clutter and lots of casino/games promotion that does irritate if you are solely a racing punter.
With regard to accepted stakes, Ladbrokes are one of the strongest layers on the internet and are willing to lay horses to much bigger sums than most of their rivals. Especially on the busy Saturday racing, or big Festivals like Cheltenham or Royal Ascot, they are definitely an online bookmaker to go to for a decent sized wager. Obviously, any punter regularly beating the SP, is going to find his bet size restricted, but Ladbrokes in our experience are more willing to give an account a fair run before doing so.
Ladbrokes are a major player and employ a huge team dedicated to customer service. There are many resources available on the website and information is broken down into logical help sections. The FAQ section is really comprehensive, and they offer free support via phone & email 24/7. All agents are friendly and had great knowledge of the site, products and account service issues.
Conclusion
There can be no doubt that, despite stiff competition in recent years, Ladbrokes fully deserves its reputation as one of the better operators in the racing business. Merging with old rivals Coral has made them a force to be reckoned with as they use their industry expertise to bring punters a dynamic, fair and cutting edge betting experience.
A wealth of racing expertise, trustworthiness, in-depth knowledge of racing markets, special betting offers are all positives for betting with Ladbrokes, for all the prices are not the most competitive compared to more internet focussed businesses like Bet365.
