Horse Racing History

The people of Rhode Island voted to approve a measure legalizing parimutuel betting on May 18, 1934, by an almost 3-1 margin. The next day, the Narragansett Racing Association announced plans for a $1 million race track and steeplechase course in Pawtucket on the site of a former airport. On June 6, 1934, the Narragansett Racing Association was awarded the state’s first horse racing permit. Construction of the track, featuring a one-mile oval, was completed in less than two months for $1.2 million. Narragansett Park opened on August 1, 1934.

The legendary Seabiscuit posted his first career victory at Narragansett Park. On September 19, 1942, the greatest moment in Rhode Island horse racing took place at Narragansett Park. The track hosted a match race between Triple Crown winner Whirlaway and 1942 Preakness Stakes winner Alsab. Finally, Alsab won the race by a nose.
