Horse Racing & Betting in Rhode Island

No live racetrack. Narragansett Park closed in 1978 and Lincoln Downs in 1976; neither has been replaced.

Rhode Island no longer hosts live horse racing, but horse betting is still legal. The state does not license online racebooks itself, but AmWager lists Rhode Island as available to residents aged 18 and over, FanDuel Racing includes it in its state list, and DraftKings Racing launched in Rhode Island on March 31, 2026.

In person: simulcast betting has been offered at the state’s casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton.

Currently, there is no live horse racing taking place anywhere in the state of Rhode Island. In fact, there hasn’t been any live horse racing in the state since Narragansett Park closed its doors to thoroughbred racing on September 4, 1978. A second thoroughbred track began racing when Lincoln Downs opened on July 7, 1947. That track closed on August 9, 1976.

Simulcast wagering is offered at both of the state’s casinos – Bally’s Twin River Lincoln – built on the site of Lincoln Downs – and Bally’s Tiverton.

Rhode Island voted for pari-mutuel betting in 1934, and Narragansett Park opened in Pawtucket that August. Seabiscuit won his first race there, and in 1942 the track staged the famous match race between Whirlaway and Alsab, which Alsab won by a nose.

The people of Rhode Island voted to approve a measure legalizing parimutuel betting on May 18, 1934, by an almost 3-1 margin. The next day, the Narragansett Racing Association announced plans for a $1 million race track and steeplechase course in Pawtucket on the site of a former airport. On June 6, 1934, the Narragansett Racing Association was awarded the state's first horse racing permit. Construction of the track, featuring a one-mile oval, was completed in less than two months for $1.2 million. Narragansett Park opened on August 1, 1934.

The legendary Seabiscuit posted his first career victory at Narragansett Park. On September 19, 1942, the greatest moment in Rhode Island horse racing took place at Narragansett Park. The track hosted a match race between Triple Crown winner Whirlaway and 1942 Preakness Stakes winner Alsab. Finally, Alsab won the race by a nose.
