There is still live horse racing in South Dakota, but the sport is clearly hanging on by a thread in the state. Fort Pierre contested two days of live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing in October of 2021. They are the last track still operational in the state. There is funding for racing there again in 2022. However, beyond next year, the future is uncertain as far as South Dakota horse racing is concerned.
In its heyday, South Dakota horse racing featured an eight-day meet at Fort Pierre and a seven-day meet in Aberdeen. In 2019, North East Area Horse Racing, the Aberdeen meet’s horse racing organization, announced that after 60 years of horse racing, Aberdeen would cease to hold races.

The Verendrye Benevolent Association, a non-profit organization, has operated Fort Pierre horse racing for more than 70 years. For years, Fort Pierre contested a spring meet. However, in 2019, when a late snowfall made racing impossible, the decision was made to move the meet to the fall. It was also decided to shorten the number of days in the meet in order to increase the purse structure.
The result of the switches was the arrival of more mature horses since spring racing tends to be dominated by younger horses learning to race. The improved purses attracted a better caliber of horse, leading to more competitive racing.
