Pari-mutuel wagering was legalized in Alabama in 1973 with the opening of Greentrack Dog Track. It wasn’t until 1987 that Alabama opened its first thoroughbred pari-mutuel wagering facility. Born as the Birmingham Turf Course and renamed Birmingham Race Course in 1989, the site was envisioned as a place where horse racing would thrive. However, live horse racing ceased at the track in July of 1995.

Today, the facility offers simulcast wagering, as well as casino gambling. The legal age to gamble in Alabama is 18.

In the 1800s, the Forks of Cypress plantation in Florence was the site of a racetrack and one of the top breeding farms for thoroughbreds in North America. Glencoe considered the leading sire of that era, stood for many years at the Forks of Cypress farm.

Hindoo, the 1881 Kentucky Derby winner, was Glencoe’s great-grandson. Glencoe’s daughter, Peytona, won a famous 1845 match race in Long Island, N.Y. against Fashion, with over 65,000 in attendance.

Other champion horses which include Glencoe in their bloodlines include Count Fleet, winner of the 1943 Triple Crown. Also among this group is Kelso, horse of the year in 1960-63. Lucky Debonair, the 1965 Kentucky Derby winner, and Deputed Testamony, winner of the 1985 Preakness.
