There hasn’t been live racing in Vermont since the 1970s. However, pari-mutuel wagering remains legal in the state. There’s even a Vermont Racing Commission, even though there’s no racing anywhere in the state. Simulcasting and off-track betting also don’t exist in Vermont.
However, there is a robust market for advance deposit wagering in the state. ADW sites accessible to Vermont horse players are plentiful. They include AmWager, TVG, 123Bet.com, 1/ST BET, Betptc, TwinSpires, Paribet, NYRA Bets, DRF Bets, DayattheTrack.com, HollywoodRaces, and Keeneland Select.

Horse Racing History
The Green Mountain State didn’t legalize pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing until 1961, via a state-wide mandate. Within two years, Green Mountain Park opened in Pownal. It was constructed on a site that was originally a cornfield, along the banks of the Hoosic River and built for a cost of $6 million. The track’s owners envisioned it becoming the Saratoga of Vermont, serving as a tourist attraction with its proximity to the New York and Massachusetts borders.
Originally, it operated as a thoroughbred track. Ultimately, winter standardbred racing was added at the track. Green Mountain Park was also one of the first tracks in the USA to experiment with nighttime racing and the first racetrack east of the Mississippi River to offer Sunday racing.
The thoroughbreds stopped racing there in 1976, while the standardbreds left for good in 1977. Green Mountain Park became a dog track until closing in 1992.
There was also fair racing for years in Rutland but wagering on these races was not permitted.
