The Kentucky Derby is America’s most famous horse race and the first leg of the Triple Crown. Run at Churchill Downs in Louisville since 1875, it’s a 1¼-mile test for up to 20 three-year-old Thoroughbreds — the largest field in American racing — and the most-bet single race in the country. The 2027 running is the 153rd renewal of “the Run for the Roses.”
Kentucky Derby 2027: When & Where: 2027 Date
The 153rd Kentucky Derby runs on Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs, with the Kentucky Oaks (the filly classic) the day before on Friday, April 30. Gates open in the morning, but the Derby itself goes off in the early evening — post time is traditionally just before 7:00 p.m. ET — as the finale of a full stakes card.

How to Bet the Kentucky Derby
Horse racing is pari-mutuel: you bet into a pool through a licensed ADW (advance-deposit wagering) app, and the odds reflect how the money is bet. Standard sportsbooks and prediction-market apps don’t offer horse racing, so an ADW is how you bet the Derby legally in most states. The most popular Derby bets:
- Win / Place / Show — your horse to finish first; first or second; or first, second, or third. The simplest way in.
- Exacta — the first two finishers in exact order.
- Trifecta / Superfecta — the first three or four in exact order. With 20 runners, these pay big and are the signature Derby bets.
- Daily Double / Pick 3–6 — the winners of consecutive races on one ticket.
New to it? Start with a few dollars to win on one or two horses, then try a small exacta box. You can watch the live board and place bets on our today’s racing page.
Kentucky Derby Betting Stats & Trends
The Derby carries a record-tying $5 million purse (the winner takes $3.1 million), and its 20-horse field is what makes it so hard to handicap:
- Favorites win about a third of the time. The post-time favorite has won 40 of the 118 runnings since 1908 — a 33.9% strike rate — but the modern era is far tougher.
- The chalk is in a long drought. No post-time favorite has won since Justify completed the Triple Crown in 2018; seven straight favorites have since been beaten.
- But the favorite still runs well. The post-time favorite has hit the board (top three) in roughly 64% of runnings, which makes the favorite a much safer play to place or show than to win.
- Longshots keep landing it. Recent winners include Mystik Dan (2024, 18-1), Sovereignty (2025), and Golden Tempo (2026, 23-1) — a reminder that value lives deeper in this field than in any other classic.
Horse.bet team tip: The Derby is the hardest race of the year to back a favorite — the maximum field, wide draws, and a hot early pace routinely trip up the chalk. If you do play the favorite, insist on three things: tactical speed to stay out of trouble, a workable post (mid-gate is ideal), and proven form at or near the 1¼-mile trip. Otherwise, use the favorite underneath in your exactas and trifectas rather than on top, and spend your win money on a mid-priced closer with a good post.
Best Odds & Watching the Board
Because the Derby is pari-mutuel, the final win price comes from one shared pool, so there’s no “better line” to shop at post time the way there is at a sportsbook. Where shopping does pay is futures — the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and early fixed-price markets, where a horse you like can be far bigger weeks out than it will be on the day. On Derby Day itself, the edge is watching the tote: late money moves the odds, and the best exotic value is usually the live horse the crowd is ignoring. Compare With Other Events:
Unlike the Preakness or Belmont, the Derby has a 20-horse field, which makes betting more unpredictable but also more rewarding. It’s also the only race with the “Derby buzz” factor—meaning odds can shift wildly based on hype, not just form.

Sports bettors looking to get in on Kentucky Derby betting action can do so at leading US racebooks across the country. Futures wagering is available on all major qualifying races during the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
As the big day approaches and post positions are finalized, racebooks will also offer head-to-head matchups between horses, exacta and trifecta combos, and special wagers like Daily Double and Pick 3s.
