Win, place and show wagering are the standard straight bets offered at New Mexico racetracks. With a win wager, a horse must finish first. A place bet enables a payout on a first or second-place finish. Show wagering covers a finish in any of the top three spots during a race. Across the board, wagering is another straight bet variable. With this bet, the horse pays out on any or all of the top three spots on the board.

Exotic wagers include the daily double, which pays for selecting the winner of consecutive races. The Pick Three and Pick Six are longer variables of the daily double. Multiple horses can be played on these wagers at a higher cost to the bettor.

Exactas (picking the first and second-place finishers of a race in correct order) and trifectas (selecting the first, second, and third-place finishers in correct order) are other exotics offered to New Mexico bettors. By boxing these bets, the horses selected are eligible to finish in any order among the places required for a payout. Wheeling these wagers picks one horse to win, with other horses wheeled into the payout positions of the wager.

New Mexico Horse Racing Betting Legal Overview

There is historical evidence of horse racing in New Mexico stretching back into the late 1930s at the state fair. Those were non-wagering events. It wasn’t until the mid-1940s that pari-mutuel wagering was legalized across the state with the launch of The Downs at Albuquerque.

Ruidoso Downs opened in 1947. Sunland Park started racing in 1959. Forty years later, Sunland launched the first racino in the state. Sun Ray Park and Zia Park also opened once the racino option was available.
