Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes is the oldest and longest leg of the Triple Crown — first run in 1867 — and the final jewel, contested three weeks after the Preakness. At its classic 1½ miles it’s known as “the Test of the Champion,” the ultimate measure of a three-year-old’s stamina. It’s where all 13 Triple Crown winners sealed the sweep, most famously Secretariat’s 31-length runaway in 1973. The 2027 running is the 159th renewal.

When & Where: 2027 Date

The 159th Belmont Stakes runs on Saturday, June 5, 2027 — and it comes home. After three years at Saratoga during construction (2024–2026), the race returns to a fully rebuilt Belmont Park, 2150 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont, New York 11003, and goes back to its traditional 1½-mile distance after the shorter Saratoga configurations. It headlines a multi-day Belmont Stakes Festival (June 2–6) and, in 2027, is the centerpiece of the new Thoroughbred Championship Series linking the Derby and the Belmont. Post time is typically early evening. Fittingly, Belmont Park also hosts the Breeders’ Cup in the fall of 2027 — its first year back is a big one.

How to Bet the Belmont Stakes

Horse racing is pari-mutuel: you bet into a shared pool through a licensed ADW (advance-deposit wagering) app, and the odds move with the money. Sportsbooks and prediction-market apps don’t offer racing, so an ADW is how you bet the Belmont legally in most states. The core bets:

  • Win / Place / Show — first; first or second; or first, second, or third.
  • Exacta — the first two finishers in exact order.
  • Trifecta / Superfecta — the first three or four in exact order. Belmont fields are usually smaller and more seasoned than the Derby’s, which makes these very playable.
  • Daily Double / Pick 3–6 — the winners of consecutive races on one ticket.

Belmont Stakes Betting Stats & Trends

The Belmont carries a $2 million purse (the winner takes 60%, or $1.2 million), and history makes it one of the best betting races of the year:

  • Favorites win ~42% all-time, but far less lately. The post-time favorite has won 66 of 157 runnings since 1867 (42%), yet only about 27% since 2000 — so the chalk is beatable in the win pool.
  • The favorite still hits the board. Favorites have finished top three in 17 of the last 25 runnings (68%), including every year since 2017 — a strong argument to use the favorite in exotics rather than to win.
  • Longshots thrive over the trip. Double-digit prices have won 12 of the last 30 Belmonts (40%), including Dornoch at 17-1 in 2024.
  • Stamina pedigree is the tell. Roughly 84% of recent winners were sired by a stallion who won a Grade 1 at 1⅛ miles or longer — a trend that gets stronger now that the race returns to the full 1½ miles.
  • Fresh horses win. Recent winners Sovereignty (2025) and Golden Tempo (2026) both skipped the Preakness and completed the Kentucky Derby–Belmont double off five weeks’ rest.

Horse.bet team tip: The Belmont is brutally honest — only true stayers win here, and it’s no place to back early speed unless the field is soft. Fade a favorite who ran hard in both earlier legs; late-race fatigue shows up over this trip. Favor proven distance pedigree, a patient closer, and a horse that comes in fresh — a Derby winner who skipped the Preakness is a classic Belmont angle. Key the favorite to place or show, and box a proven stayer with one fresh new shooter in your exactas and trifectas.

Best Odds & Watching the Board

Belmont win odds are pari-mutuel, set by one shared pool, so at post time the price is the same wherever you bet. The edge is before the race: futures open as soon as the Preakness is over, and if a Triple Crown is on the line you’ll see a wave of markets on the sweep — often good value to bet against a vulnerable favorite. On the day, watch the tote for late money and target the overlay the crowd is underrating. Track live Belmont odds, entries, and the full Belmont Park card on our Belmont Park racing data page.

What Makes the Belmont Stakes Unique?

  • Distance: Longest Triple Crown race (1½ miles)
  • Pace: Usually slower early, but tests true stamina late
  • Field Size: Often smaller than the Derby but with more experienced horses
  • Triple Crown Drama: If a horse wins the Derby & Preakness, this becomes must-watch history

Compared to the Derby’s chaos and the Preakness’s speed duel, the Belmont is a tactical chess match. Every step matters—and so do your bets.
