Pegasus World Cup, late January
A $3 million Grade 1 invitational over 1 1/8 miles on dirt, the Pegasus World Cup is one of the richest races in American thoroughbred racing. The race was launched in 2017 as the world’s richest race ($12 million at debut) and has been won by Arrogate, Gun Runner, City of Light and Knicks Go.

Gulfstream Park operates a championship year-round program, but the headline meet is the Championship Meet from early December through late April. The Championship Meet features the Pegasus World Cup in late January, the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth (key Kentucky Derby preps), and the Florida Derby in early April.
Florida Derby (early April)
The Florida Derby is one of the four major Kentucky Derby prep races, run over 1 1/8 miles on dirt with 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner. The race has produced numerous Kentucky Derby winners including Big Brown, Always Dreaming and Always Dreaming. Florida Derby form is followed especially closely by Derby Day handicappers.
Pegasus World Cup (late January)
The Pegasus World Cup is a Grade 1 invitational designed to bring together the best American dirt horses for a $3 million end-of-career/start-of-year showpiece. The companion Pegasus Turf Invitational was added in 2019. Both races are run on Gulfstream’s late-January Pegasus Day card.
Fountain of Youth & Holy Bull (February-March)
Two of the year’s most important Kentucky Derby prep races. The Holy Bull (early February) and Fountain of Youth (early March) carry 50 and 60 Derby qualifying points respectively. Both races serve as the East Coast’s key Florida Derby prep.

The Florida Derby has a strong track record of producing Kentucky Derby winners and runners-up. Speed figures generated in the race tend to be among the highest of any Derby prep, reflecting Gulfstream’s fair, fast dirt surface.
