Queen’s Plate, mid-August
The oldest continuously-run stakes race in North America, first contested in 1860. The Queen’s Plate (formerly the King’s Plate) is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, restricted to three-year-old thoroughbreds foaled in Canada. Total purse $1 million CAD.
Meets & featured races
Woodbine’s thoroughbred meet runs from April through December, the longest meet at any major North American track. The headline race is the Queen’s Plate in mid-August, the oldest continuously-run stakes race in North America. Other major Grade 1s include the Canadian International (turf, October) and the Atto Mile (turf, September).
Queen’s Plate (mid-August)
The Queen’s Plate is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, alongside the Prince of Wales Stakes (Fort Erie, mid-September) and the Breeders’ Stakes (Woodbine, late September). Restricted to Canadian-foaled three-year-olds, the race is the centerpiece of Canadian thoroughbred racing each year. Run over 1 1/4 miles on Woodbine’s tapeta main track.
Canadian International Stakes (mid-October)
The Canadian International is Woodbine’s major international turf race, run over 1 1/2 miles for older horses. The Grade 1 has historically attracted European-trained horses targeting a fall North American campaign. Singspiel (1996) is among the most famous past winners.
Atto Mile (mid-September)
The Atto Mile (formerly Atto Mile) is a Grade 1 over one mile on turf for older horses. The race has a strong international flavor and routinely produces Breeders’ Cup Mile contenders. Past winners include Modern Games and Wise Dan.
Queen’s Plate Key Trends
The Queen’s Plate is restricted to Canadian-foaled horses, which limits the field to a specific pool of three-year-olds bred north of the border. The race tends to be tactically run, with horses ridden patiently around Woodbine’s mile-and-a-half tapeta main track. Mark Casse and Josie Carroll are among the leading trainers of recent renewals.
