About Belmont Park

Home of the Belmont Stakes — the third leg of the Triple Crown and the year’s ultimate test of stamina at 1.5 miles. Belmont Park hosts the spring and fall meets of the New York Racing Association, with Aqueduct’s Big A taking over for winter dates. Belmont Park is located at 2150 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont, NY 11003.

FLAGSHIP RACE

Belmont Stakes, early June

The third leg of the Triple Crown and the ultimate test of stamina for three-year-old thoroughbreds. Run over 1 1/2 miles on dirt — longer than any other Triple Crown race — the Belmont has crowned 13 Triple Crown winners since 1875, most recently Justify (2018) and American Pharoah (2015).

Meets & featured races

Belmont Park hosts the spring and fall meets of the New York Racing Association (NYRA), with the spring meet from May through July and the fall meet in September and October. Winter dates are run at Aqueduct’s Big A track. The Belmont Stakes in early June is the year’s defining race — the third leg of the Triple Crown.

Belmont Stakes (early June)

The Test of the Champion. The 1 1/2-mile Belmont is the longest Triple Crown race and a true stamina test, run over a track known as ‘Big Sandy’ for its expansive dirt course. American Pharoah ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought in 2015; Justify followed in 2018. The race has historically rewarded horses with strong stamina pedigree and the ability to handle the demanding distance.

Belmont Derby Invitational (early July)

The Belmont Derby is the country’s premier turf race for three-year-olds, run over 1 1/4 miles on grass with a $1 million purse. The race is part of an exceptional July 4 weekend card that also features the Belmont Oaks Invitational for three-year-old fillies on turf.

Metropolitan Handicap (early June)

The Met Mile is the country’s premier one-mile dirt race for older horses, run on Belmont Stakes weekend. The Grade 1 has crowned modern greats including Frosted, Honor Code and Carpe Diem.

Belmont Stakes Key Trends

The 1 1/2-mile distance favors closers with stamina pedigree. Horses that ran in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness are typically tired by Belmont Day, opening the door for fresh contenders that skipped one or both earlier Triple Crown races. The post position has limited impact at the trip; pace tactics matter far more.

Track statistics & betting angles

Track configuration

1 1/2 mile dirt oval (the ‘Big Sandy’), the largest in North American thoroughbred racing. 1 5/16 mile inner turf course and 7-furlong outer turf course.

Track condition

Belmont’s deep, sandy main track is one of the fairest in American racing — rarely produces strong rail or speed bias. Suits horses with stamina and class.

NYRA circuit

Belmont is the spring/fall NYRA flagship. Many trainers based at Belmont also race at Aqueduct (winter) and Saratoga (summer), so circuit form ties closely between all three tracks.

Top trainers

Todd Pletcher dominates NYRA stakes racing. Bill Mott, Chad Brown and Steve Asmussen all have strong Belmont records, particularly in the longer dirt races.

How to watch Belmont Park racing

NBC Sports broadcasts the Belmont Stakes nationally. FOX Sports has the rights to most major NYRA stakes weekends throughout the year. FanDuel TV provides year-round live coverage of every Belmont Park race. For race-by-race picks, the horse.bet Racing Predictor publishes daily Belmont Park analysis the morning of racing.

Visiting Belmont Park

Belmont Park is in Elmont, NY, on the border between Queens and Nassau County. The track is accessible by Long Island Rail Road (Belmont Park station, direct service from Penn Station on race days) and by car via the Cross Island Parkway. Note: as of late 2024, a major Belmont reconstruction project is underway, with some race dates temporarily moved to Aqueduct — check the NYRA website for the current schedule.
