Glorious Goodwood 2027: Five Days of Group 1 Racing on the Downs
The Qatar Goodwood Festival runs from Tuesday 27 to Saturday 31 July 2027, the dates set out in the BHA fixture list. To almost everyone who goes, it is still Glorious Goodwood: five afternoons of high-summer racing on the Sussex Downs, a few miles north of Chichester, with the Trundle hill fort serving as an unofficial grandstand above the course.
The 2026 meeting, run from 28 July to 1 August, staged almost 40 races. The Group 1s fall on the first three days: the Goodwood Cup on Tuesday, the Sussex Stakes on Wednesday and the Nassau Stakes on Thursday. Friday belongs to the sprinters in the King George Stakes, and Saturday to the Stewards' Cup, a six-furlong cavalry charge that tests punters as much as horses.
Money has followed the meeting's ambition. Goodwood announced in July 2026 that the Sussex Stakes would be run for a record £1.5 million, making it the most valuable mile race in Europe; Bow Echo collected £850,650 for winning it. The day-by-day order below follows the 2026 card, which is the best guide to the 2027 programme.
Goodwood's quirks matter to punters. The undulating track rewards tactical speed and a jockey who knows where the gaps appear, and the busy handicaps tend to throw up hard-luck stories. The Sussex Stakes: Goodwood's championship mile
The meeting's centrepiece is a one-mile Group 1 for three-year-olds and up, where the Classic generation meets its elders for the first time over the trip. Bow Echo won it in 2026 at 10/11, beating Gstaad by half a length, to complete the 2,000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes treble last achieved by Frankel in 2011.
The Goodwood Cup and the Nassau Stakes
The two-mile Goodwood Cup opens proceedings on Tuesday and has become Aidan O'Brien's property in recent runnings: Scandinavia won it in 2025 and again in 2026, when he beat Trawlerman by eight and a half lengths at 6/5. Thursday's Nassau, over a mile and a quarter for fillies and mares, is the other Group 1 on the card.

Sussex Stakes Odds and the Glorious Goodwood Ante-Post Market
Ante-post betting on the Sussex Stakes, the Goodwood Cup and the Stewards' Cup takes shape late. The Sussex is the first chance for the Classic milers to take on their elders, so its market waits on the Guineas and Royal Ascot, and the Stewards' Cup field is not known until the summer handicaps have set the ratings.
The 2026 starting prices give a sense of how the market behaves at the meeting. The Group 1s were largely won by short-priced favourites; the Stewards' Cup, as ever, was not.

How to Bet on Glorious Goodwood: BOG, Each-Way Places and NRNB
Goodwood's big fields and tight finishes reward punters who pay attention to the terms as well as the price. Four concessions are worth knowing before the first race on Tuesday.
Best Odds Guaranteed. Take a price on the morning of the race and, if your horse starts at bigger odds, you are paid at the starting price. Extra places. In a handicap of 16 runners or more, standard each-way terms pay a quarter of the odds for the first four. Several bookmakers go further on the big festival handicaps; Coral, the Stewards' Cup sponsor, publishes Extra Place races daily, with five places on selected big races. Non-runner no bet. Ante-post bets are normally lost if your horse does not run. Non-runner no bet terms refund the stake, which is what makes an early Sussex Stakes bet worth considering at all.
Each-way maths. A 16/1 shot placed fourth at a quarter of the odds returns more than many short-priced winners. Our each-way calculator shows exactly what an extra place is worth.
Non-runners on the day. A withdrawal after you have bet can bring a Rule 4 deduction on your winnings, and in a field hovering around 16 runners it can also cost a place.
Stewards' Cup betting
Twenty-seven ran in both 2025 and 2026, so the Stewards' Cup is the race where place terms decide whether a bet pays. With a quarter of the odds for four places as standard, any bookmaker paying five or six transforms the value of an each-way bet on a big-priced sprinter. Goodwood's straight six furlongs, the Stewards' Cup course, carries fields of 27 and more, and the draw can settle the race before the stalls open. The trouble for punters is that the bias does not stay put.

In 2025 the high-drawn group had it to themselves; a year later the winner came from stall 10 and the frame was filled from both sides. The ground, the watering and where the fast horses are drawn all play a part. The practical approach is to watch the earlier straight-course races that week, and on the day itself, before committing to a side.
On the round course, races beyond seven furlongs use the tight right-handed loop, where a horse that has to race wide on the turns gives away ground and a horse stuck on the inner can be shut in. The 2025 Sussex Stakes produced one of the shocks of the decade. Qirat, supplemented at a cost of £70,000 to set the pace for the 1/3 favourite Field Of Gold, kept going to beat Rosallion by a neck at 150/1, with Field Of Gold only fourth. A year later order was restored: Bow Echo, stuck in the pack for much of the race, picked up late to beat Gstaad by half a length and stay unbeaten.
Scandinavia became the first three-year-old to win the Goodwood Cup since Stradivarius in 2017, leading an O'Brien one-two over the favourite Illinois. He came back in 2026 to beat Trawlerman by eight and a half lengths, having beaten the same rival by a head in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Stradivarius holds the race record with four wins, from 2017 to 2020.
In the Stewards' Cup, Two Tribes won in 2025 a week after landing a valuable seven-furlong handicap at Ascot, and the first four home were all drawn in stall 18 or higher. Evening Saigon won a tight finish in 2026 from stall 10, with a head, a short head and a neck separating the first four. On the Friday, the King George Stakes over five furlongs went to the 12/1 shot American Affair for Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan.

Glorious Goodwood Tips: Trends Worth Following
No selections here until the fields are declared. What the 2025 and 2026 results do offer is a set of patterns worth weighing once the declarations are out.
Respect Ballydoyle in the Nassau. Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore won it three years running: Opera Singer in 2024, Whirl in 2025 and Diamond Necklace in 2026.
Course form counts in the Cup. Scandinavia won the Goodwood Cup twice, and Stradivarius four times. Proven stayers who have handled the loop tend to come back for more.
Favourites can be opposed, carefully. Illinois was beaten at 7/4 in the 2025 Goodwood Cup and Field Of Gold at 1/3 in the Sussex. Odds-on shots won the Nassau and Sussex in 2026, so take a view rather than a rule.
Watch the draw in the Stewards' Cup. In 2025 the high-drawn group dominated; in 2026 the winner came from stall 10. The bias varies with the ground and where the pace sits, so check which side is favoured on the earlier straight-course races that week.
Back sprinters each way. With 27 runners and a 16/1 winner in 2026, the Stewards' Cup is a race for extra places, not win-only bets.

The track
Goodwood Racecourse: Course Notes for Punters
Goodwood is unlike any other major flat track in Britain. The straight six-furlong course, known as the Stewards' Cup Course, climbs for the first furlong and then runs mostly downhill, which brings speed and balance into play. Races beyond seven furlongs use a tight right-handed loop at the far end, with severe undulations and sharp turns.
The two-mile Goodwood Cup starts close to the winning post, runs out along the straight, around the loop and back again. Horses that handle the camber and the downhill run to the line come back to the course year after year, so course form deserves more weight here than at most venues.
Goodwood is about 60 miles from London. The course is run by Goodwood Racecourse Ltd on the Duke of Richmond's estate, and the meeting itself dates from 1802.
