Glorious Goodwood, late July

Goodwood is a flat-only track. The season runs from May to October with the highlight unquestionably the five-day Qatar Goodwood Festival — known universally as Glorious Goodwood — in late July and early August.
QIPCO Sussex Stakes (Wednesday of the Festival)
The Wednesday highlight and the meeting’s most prestigious race. The Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 over the straight mile and one of the standout middle-distance contests of the British flat season. Frankel won the race twice during his unbeaten 14-race career — victories that helped earn the Henry Cecil-trained colt the title of best racehorse in the world.
Goodwood Cup (Tuesday)
The opening day Group 1 over two miles, one of the most important staying races in Europe. Stradivarius dominated the race in the late 2010s, winning four consecutive renewals from 2017 to 2020 under Frankie Dettori. The Goodwood Cup is the first leg of Britain’s Stayers’ Triple Crown.
Nassau Stakes (Thursday)
The championship contest for fillies and mares over a mile and a furlong. Recent winners include Minding (2016), Winx’s sister Boomer in (2018), and Above the Curve (2022). The Nassau is increasingly the target for the best older fillies in training.
Stewards’ Cup (Saturday)
The traditional season-ending Saturday handicap, a six-furlong sprint famous for huge fields and bigger-priced winners. The combination of the straight course’s draw bias and the depth of the British sprint handicap division makes it one of the betting puzzles of the summer.
