The meeting

British Champions Day: The Flat Season's Finale at Ascot

British Champions Day closes the Flat season's championship programme on a Saturday in mid-October at Ascot. Since it was first staged in 2011 it has gathered the autumn championship races for stayers, sprinters, fillies and mares, milers and middle-distance horses on to one card, and in 2026 it was worth £4.35m, making it the most valuable day in the British racing calendar.

QIPCO sponsored the day from its first running. In August 2026 its subsidiary Qatar Racing took over as title sponsor for three years, and the 2026 meeting, run on 17 October, was staged as Qatar Racing British Champions Day, with Qatar Racing's name on all seven races.

The 2027 date follows the pattern. The BHA's 2027 fixture list has Ascot racing on Saturday 16 October, the mid-October Saturday on which the meeting has been held, and Ascot publishes the Champions Day card and race times nearer the day.

For punters it is a different proposition from the summer festivals. The fields are small and the form is well exposed by October, so the Group 1s are about judging which horses still have their best form after a long season. The one big-field betting race, the Balmoral Handicap, is where place terms come into play. Our Ascot racecourse guide covers the track.

In 2026 racing began at 12.55pm with a two-year-old conditions race, the Long Distance Cup was the first Group 1 at 1.30pm, the Champion Stakes went off at 4pm and the Balmoral Handicap closed the card at 4.35pm.

The Champion Stakes

The richest race of the day, over about a mile and a quarter, and the race that settles the middle-distance championship. Ombudsman, winner of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2025 and 2026, took it at 5/4 for John and Thady Gosden and William Buick, three and three-quarter lengths clear of Calandagan, with the Coronation Cup winner Bay City Roller third.

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

The mile championship, run on the round course. Talk Of New York, a three-year-old trained by Charlie Appleby, won at 3/1 from the Queen Anne winner Ten Bob Tony, while the 7/4 favourite Gstaad, second in the 2,000 Guineas, the St James’s Palace and the Sussex Stakes, finished only eighth.

The Sprint, the Fillies & Mares and the Long Distance Cup

Almeraq, the 25/1 winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, completed a Group 1 double at the same course in the Sprint at 11/10, a neck in front of Paborus. Minnie Hauk, the 2025 Oaks winner, beat Believed by a length and a half in the Fillies & Mares Stakes, with the evens favourite Kalpana seventh. The Long Distance Cup, upgraded to Group 1 in 2025, produced the shock of the afternoon: Mount Atlas won at 33/1 for Andrew Balding and P J McDonald, with the 7/4 favourite Highwayman third.

Betting angles

Champions Day Tips: What the 2026 Results Tell Us

Selections can wait for the declarations, but the 2026 card offers a few useful lessons.

Late-season form is fragile

Three favourites were beaten in the five Group 1s: Kalpana at evens, Gstaad at 7/4 and Highwayman at 7/4. Kalpana had won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks; Gstaad had been placed in three Group 1s. By October some top horses have simply had enough, and a horse who has been freshened up can have the edge.

Royal Ascot form holds up

Ombudsman and Almeraq had both won at Royal Ascot in June, and Ten Bob Tony, the Queen Anne winner, was second in the QEII. Horses who have already shown their best form round Ascot deserve extra weight in the betting.

Follow the in-form yards and riders

William Buick rode three winners on the 2026 card, the Champion Stakes, the QEII and the Balmoral Handicap, and the Gosden stable won two of them. October is when the big yards’ campaign plans are clearest.

Small fields, big margins

Six ran in the 2026 Champion Stakes, so each-way terms shrink to two places, and the winner pulled clear. In races like that, a win single at a fair price usually makes more sense than an each-way bet.

Betting guide

How to Bet on Champions Day: Each-Way Terms, BOG and Ante-Post

Each-way terms in small fields

Field sizes decide the place terms. With five to seven runners, standard each-way terms are a quarter of the odds for two places; with eight or more in a non-handicap, a fifth for three places. The 2026 Champion Stakes had six runners, the QEII eleven and the Sprint sixteen, so the same bet type means something different from race to race. A late withdrawal can drop a field below eight and cost a place, and can bring a Rule 4 deduction on your winnings.

The Balmoral Handicap and extra places

The Balmoral, a 20-runner handicap over the straight mile in 2026, is the race for extra places. Standard terms for a handicap of 16 or more runners are a quarter of the odds for four places; some bookmakers pay more, as our extra places guide explains, and handicap races explained covers how the weights bring the field together. The 2026 winner, Fifth Column, came from stall 13, with the placed horses drawn 16, 21 and 23.

Best Odds Guaranteed

With prices often moving on the morning of a big Saturday, Best Odds Guaranteed is worth having: bet365 and Betfred start at 8am, Grosvenor Sport at 9am. If the starting price is bigger than the price you took, you are paid at SP.

Ante-post and the going

Bookmakers price up the Champions Day races well in advance, but an early bet carries real risk: horses miss the meeting because of the ground, a hard campaign or a change of target. Unless a bookmaker offers non-runner no bet, our ante-post betting guide suggests waiting. The going was good in 2026, but mid-October ground at Ascot can soften quickly, so check the official report, explained in our going guide, and each horse's form on soft ground on the card, using our guide to reading a racecard.

  1. Open accounts early and compare racing terms in our horse racing betting sites guide.
  2. Claim the welcome offer, entering the Promo Code at sign-up if the offer needs one, and check that racing bets qualify.
  3. Wait for the declarations unless you have non-runner no bet terms.
  4. Match the bet to the field size: win singles in the small Group 1s, each way with extra places in the Balmoral.
  5. Set a limit for the day. Free, confidential help is available at GambleAware.org.
TV and streaming

How to Watch British Champions Day

In 2026 ITV1 showed the card on free-to-air television and Sky Sports Racing showed every race live. Most of the bookmakers we cover also stream British racing in their apps to customers with a funded account or a recent bet; the conditions vary and are set out in each review.

Where to bet

Champions Day Free Bets: Choosing a Bookmaker for Ascot

For a card of small Group 1 fields and one big handicap, the terms that matter are Best Odds Guaranteed, each-way places in the Balmoral and a price that holds up on the morning. The four firms above were chosen on that basis; full welcome terms sit alongside each offer.

  • bet365: Best Odds Guaranteed from 8am with no published cap, early prices on every UK and Irish race, and Each Way Extra on selected races.
  • Betfred: BOG from 8am with no opt-in and no published cap, and Extra Place races on selected big British handicaps.
  • Coral: daily Extra Place races and Pipped at the Post, which pays out on selected Racing Club races if your horse is beaten a head or less on the Flat.
  • Grosvenor Sport: BOG from 9am on singles and multiples, with no opt-in.

Many of the Champions Day runners will have met at Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor Festival earlier in the year; those pages cover the summer form.
