Yes, most “best bookmaker” lists are written by people who bet on football. This one is not. Every firm below is judged on the things that decide whether you win or lose betting horses: how early the prices go up, whether Best Odds Guaranteed is honoured, how much they will actually lay you, place terms in big-field handicaps, and how quickly the account gets restricted once you start beating the starting price.
Five make the list. One is an exchange, two are high-street names with deep racing roots, one is the most complete online product in the sport, and one is a firm whose racing offering has slipped but still has its uses.
How these bookmakers are rated
Prices and when they go up. A firm that posts tomorrow’s racing the night before gives you a chance to take value before the market settles. One that waits until the morning does not.
Best Odds Guaranteed. If the starting price is bigger than the price you took, you should be paid at the SP. This is the single most valuable concession in racing betting and not every firm offers it on every race.
What they will lay. Bet limits matter more in racing than any other sport. A firm that cuts you to £4.73 after two winners is no use regardless of how good the app looks.
Place terms. Standard off-course terms are 1/4 the odds, places 1-2-3-4 in handicaps of 16 or more runners. Extra-place offers and enhanced terms on big fields are worth real money to each-way punters; our extra places guide explains how they work.
Streaming and tools. Free racing streams without needing a qualifying bet, decent form data, and an app that lets you get a bet on before the off.
1. bet365 — 8/10

Best for: Market depth, early prices and the best app in racing
bet365 is one of the largest online betting operators in the world and an essential account for any British racing punter. They offer a full range of markets on every race in Britain every day and, crucially, post early prices on every UK and Irish race. Early prices can be something of a bun fight for small stakes, with bet size limited, but they throw up genuine value for anyone quick enough to take advantage.
Racing markets and odds
Ante-post markets are comprehensive, and bet365 are braver than most with prices on fancied contenders in the biggest races. There is also a Tote option, letting punters into daily Jackpot and Placepot pools which can offer terrific value at major meetings such as the Cheltenham Festival.
Odds are competitive across the board and, as with most firms, weekend prices are sharpest, since that is where the attention is. Best Odds Guaranteed covers win and each-way bets on British and Irish racing from 08:00 with no published cap, and the Racing Value package adds Double Result, which pays on a horse first past the post that is later demoted, and waives the first 5p of any Rule 4 deduction. Special offers are plentiful, though less prominently flagged than at some competitors.
Live streaming and in-play
bet365 were among the pioneers of in-play betting. A funded account, or a bet in the past 24 hours, opens live pictures of racing in Britain, Ireland and France, although some races also need a qualifying bet. The bet builder lets you construct your own bets with the odds calculated for you.
App and payments
The website and app have led the industry for years. The interface is simple, navigation is quick, and the left-hand sports menu is clear. You can bookmark favourite selections, pages load fast, and the in-play section has strong graphics and useful statistics. Some of the better form tools are buried in the footer. The bet slip handles any combination of bets easily.
The app holds a 4.7 rating from about 455,000 UK App Store ratings. Deposits start at £5 (£25 by PayPal), with debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Trustly accepted, though there is no telephone support.
Verdict
The best app in the business and early prices on every British and Irish race. For a recreational racing punter this is the single best account to hold. Like most bookmakers, bet365 can limit stakes on accounts that regularly beat the starting price. The welcome offer is Bet £10 Get £30 in Bet Credits, with Promo Code 365GMBLR available at registration — and our bet365 sign-up offer guide covers the qualifying terms in full.
New bet365 customers only. Min deposit requirement. Free Bets are paid as Bet Credits and are available for use upon settlement of bets to value of qualifying deposit. Min odds, bet and payment method exclusions apply. Returns exclude Bet Credits stake. Registration required. The bonus code 365GMBLR can be used during registration but does not change the offer amount in any way. Time limits and T&Cs apply. 18+. GambleAware.org
Pros: Early prices on every UK and Irish race · BOG from 08:00 with no published cap · best app and bet slip · Tote access Cons: No telephone support · streaming requires a funded account · form tools hard to find
2. Matchbook Exchange — 7/10

Best for: Low commission and laying
Matchbook is the most credible challenger to Betfair on the exchange side, and it has gone after racing specifically. Its weapon is cost: a standard 2% commission on net winnings, and Matchbook Zero for commission-free win bets on racing.
Racing markets and liquidity
Matchbook runs separate win and place markets on British and Irish racing, with in-play betting as well. Markets are thin early in the day, and the serious money arrives close to the off.
The cheaper commission has drawn money across, but Matchbook is still a smaller exchange than Betfair, and its markets thin out away from the main British and Irish meetings, so a big lay on a midweek maiden may not be matched at the price you want.
Close to the off on the bigger races, win and place prices sit close to what is available elsewhere. Multiples and Bet Builders sit alongside the exchange, although losses on them do not count towards the welcome rebate.
Commission
Matchbook charges a standard 2% on net winnings in each market, against Betfair’s 5% Market Base Rate, which suits high-volume, low-margin punters. The welcome offer returns 20% of your net exchange losses over the first 30 days as free bets, capped at £200 per event and £1,000 in all, using Promo Code REBATE20.
New customers only. Sign up with Promo Code REBATE20. Qualifying users receive a 20% rebate on overall qualifying losses recorded in the 30 calendar days from registration, paid as free bets: max £200 rebate per event, £1,000 overall. Free bets expire 7 days after crediting; stake not returned. First deposits by Skrill or Neteller do not qualify. Bets on Matchbook Zero do not count. Only losses on Matchbook Exchange markets count; losses on multiples, Bet Builders, casino or other products are excluded. Full T&Cs apply. 18+. GambleAware.org
Live streaming and app
Live racing streams are promised in the app listing, though some users report them as patchy, so keep a bookmaker account for pictures. Our British racecourse guides fill in the background on each track. The app holds a 4.7 rating from about 1,600 UK App Store ratings, and it is clean, quick and largely glitch-free, with blue for backing on the left and pink for laying on the right in the familiar exchange layout. Bet acceptance and confirmation are straightforward.
First deposits by Skrill or Neteller do not count towards the welcome offer, and bets on Matchbook Zero are left out of the rebate.
Verdict
Matchbook has given Betfair genuine competition by focusing on racing, precisely where liquidity is hardest to build. The weekly betting podcast discusses the weekend’s racing in depth with a range of experts and is worth the time. For a serious racing punter it is well worth holding alongside a traditional bookmaker. Our full Matchbook review covers the commission structure in detail.
Pros: 2% commission on net winnings · Matchbook Zero on racing win bets · 4.7-rated app · weekly racing podcast Cons: Liquidity behind Betfair outside the big meetings · live streams reported as patchy · smaller ante-post markets
3. William Hill — 7/10

Best for: Each-way terms and ante-post
William Hill, part of Evoke plc, is one of Britain’s best-known bookmakers and has a long-standing reputation for racing. The shop estate made it a household name, and it remains a serious ante-post layer on the big races.
Racing markets and bet types
British and Irish racing is priced in depth, with South African and selected US meetings, racing specials and jockey and trainer markets alongside, and Tote pool betting sits in the same app. Best Odds Guaranteed covers win and each-way singles and multiples from 08:00, but you must opt in from the racecard, William Hill’s help pages describe it as invite-only, and the extra paid is capped at £25,000 a day.
Every common bet type is catered for, from win and each-way through to Trixies, Patents, Yankees, Lucky 15s and Lucky 31s. Standard each-way terms are published field size by field size, including 1/4 the odds for four places in handicaps of 16 or more runners, and Each Way Extra lets you set your own place terms on British and Irish races, though those bets sit outside BOG.
If you want to work out what those place terms actually return, our each-way calculator does the maths for you. Full-cover multiples have long been a William Hill staple for the Saturday punter playing the televised races.
Live streaming
WHTV streams UK and Irish racing on desktop and in the app to anyone logged in with a positive balance or a bet in the past 24 hours, provided there is at least £1 on the race, or 50p each way.
William Hill is at its most competitive on Saturday feature races and at the big festivals: Cheltenham, Royal Ascot and York’s Dante meeting.
App
The app is rated 4.7 from around 200,000 UK App Store ratings, and racing selections are quick to find. Live streaming, results and large multiple bets are all straightforward, and cash out is available on win-only racing bets.
Verdict
A top-class service from a firm you can trust. The large shop estate historically meant less pressure to compete online, and margins reflected that. The website and app have changed the picture considerably, and published each-way terms, Each Way Extra and WHTV make William Hill a strong account for each-way punters, as long as you remember to opt in to BOG. See the William Hill promo code page for the current sign-up terms.
Pros: Each-way terms published in full · Each Way Extra · WHTV streams with £1 on the race · Visa Direct withdrawals within four hours Cons: BOG is opt-in, invite-only and capped at £25,000 a day · prices not always the sharpest midweek
4. BetVictor — 7/10

Best for: Ante-post opinions and customer service
The Chandler family bookmaking business passed to William Chandler’s sons on his death in 1946, and the firm traded as Victor Chandler until rebranding to BetVictor in 2012. It moved its headquarters to Gibraltar in 1999 and now sits within BVGroup, and the legacy of the family’s on-course pitches is still fresh in the memory of older punters.
Racing markets and coverage
BetVictor covers all the events you would expect — racing, football, rugby, greyhounds, cricket, golf and darts. Experienced punters will find the depth on individual events thinner than at bet365 or Sky Bet, but there is still plenty on offer.
The racing offering spans a global spread of cards. The main focus is British and Irish racing, with international meetings reached through the BetFinder tool. They are traditionally strong in the ante-post arena, where their opinions can be genuinely warm.
Streaming and odds
UK and Irish racing is streamed live in the app. Best Odds Guaranteed applies to every British and Irish race from 9am for all customers, with no opt-in, racing price boosts are offered, and cash out works on win and each-way racing bets.
Match bets are thin, and the racing offering has been left behind somewhat by firms like bet365.
App
BetVictor has invested heavily in the website, app and account facilities, and the app holds a 4.7 rating from about 57,000 UK App Store ratings. The interface is simple and reasonably easy to find your way around, with a clear racing menu and quick page loads. The layout does get clunky in places and takes too many clicks to reach some information, match bets in particular. Registration is easy and account services are secure.
Verdict
BetVictor’s longevity speaks for itself, and in our experience its help desk knows its racing. There is no PayPal or other e-wallet for deposits, and the welcome offer has to be qualified on football. The app is good rather than outstanding. BetVictor rates particularly well for the newer punter, where the tools and resources genuinely help. The BetVictor offer page has the current welcome offer.
Pros: BOG from 9am with no opt-in · UK and Irish streams in the app · cash out on each-way racing bets Cons: No PayPal or e-wallets · welcome offer is football-only · interface needs too many clicks
5. Ladbrokes — 7/10

Best for: Racecard tools and Tote pools
Founded in 1886 by Messrs Schwind and Pennington as commission agents for horses trained at Ladbroke Hall in Warwickshire, the firm has been tied to racing from the start. The 2018 acquisition of Ladbrokes Coral by GVC — rebranded Entain — created one of the largest bookmaking groups in the world. Racing has traditionally been one of its strongest suits.
Racing markets and tools
The historic racing knowledge shows, and Ladbrokes rank among the best at understanding what racing customers actually want. They are strong on international meetings as well as the British and Irish scene, with a multitude of racing features accessible from both site and app.
Build Your Own Racecard is genuinely useful: add up to ten races from any British, Irish or international meeting to one card, then use the Bet Filter to narrow each field by odds range, form and whether a horse is proven on the ground.
The Pre-Parade tab brings up Racing Post stats and form for every runner, and the Horse Racing Bet Builder combines several outcomes from one race in a single price.
Streaming and odds
Live racing streams are available in the app. Ladbrokes were once notably opinionated, particularly ante-post, though they go out on a limb less often now. The retail heritage means a large recreational customer base, and they serve it well with a strong range of racing prices.
Best Odds Guaranteed covers every UK and Irish race from 8am, but only after a one-time opt-in, with the extra capped at £10,000 a day and PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and prepaid-card depositors excluded. Pool punters can join the Tote Guarantee on selected races. Boosts and specials are plentiful, and around the big meetings the menu widens to jockey, trainer and winning-distance markets.
App
Ladbrokes invested heavily here after years of struggling to compete, and the experience is now much better. The familiar red and white branding carries a site packed with features and tools. Finding a racing market is easy, the bet slip and my bets tabs keep you on track, navigation is logical despite the volume of content, and loading times are quick. There is still clutter, and the casino promotion is irritating if you are purely a racing punter.
In our experience Ladbrokes will lay a fair bet on busy Saturdays and at Cheltenham and Royal Ascot, though, as with any bookmaker, an account that regularly beats the SP can expect limits eventually.
Verdict
Ladbrokes fully deserve their reputation as one of the better operators in racing. The merger with old rivals Coral made them a force, and the combination of racing expertise, trustworthiness and genuinely useful tools carries the offering. Prices are not the sharpest compared with internet-native firms like bet365, but the racecard tools go a long way to compensate. The welcome offer is Bet £5 Get £30 — the lowest qualifying stake of any firm on this page, and one of the easiest to clear. Full conditions are in our Ladbrokes offer review.
New UK+ROI Customers only. Certain deposit methods & bet types excl. Min first £5 bet within 14 days of account reg at min odds 1/2 to get 6 x £5 free bets (selected sportsbook markets only, valid 7 days, stake not returned). Restrictions + T&Cs apply. Min deposit £5. 18+. GambleAware.org
Pros: BOG on every UK and Irish race from 8am · Build Your Own Racecard and Bet Filter · Tote Guarantee pools Cons: BOG needs an opt-in and excludes e-wallet depositors · prices not the sharpest · heavy casino promotion in the app
Smaller and newer bookmakers: welcome offers for racing
Beyond the big names, a run of smaller sportsbooks compete for new customers with headline offers. Our new betting sites page reviews the newer licensed bookmakers in full; these are the welcome offers worth knowing if you bet on racing.
How the smaller firms’ offers compare
Most are buying attention with headline numbers, so the qualifying terms are where the differences lie.

BestOdds offers the smallest of the group: a £10 qualifying bet at evens returns two £5 free bets, the second arriving 24 hours after the first, and each lasts only 24 hours. Casimba Sports runs a free bet rather than a matched bonus — a £10 single at 2.0 or bigger on a £20 deposit returns a £10 free bet, with winnings paid as cash. easyBet wants £20 staked across at least two separate events at 2.0 or better with Promo Code EB20, so a single race will not qualify you.
BestOdds: New UK customers only. Place a £10+ bet on any selections at minimum odds of EVS (2.00) to receive 2 x £5 Free Bets. GambleAware.org
Lottoland Sports is the one to read carefully before committing: its Bet £10 Get £10 requires an acca or bet builder of two or more selections at minimum odds of 3/1, which rules out a straight win single on the horses entirely. The pattern across the group is that the money is real but the qualifying conditions are tighter than at the established books, and several are written for football accumulators rather than racing singles.
New sports customers only. Deposit £10+ by debit card. Opt in, claim & bet £10+ on any acca or Bet Builder (2+ selections) (min odds 3/1 (4.00)). Get a £10 acca or Bet Builder free bet (2+ selections). Offer ongoing but must be completed within 7 days of claim. Free bet expires 7 days from claim. No cash out. Full T&Cs apply. 18+. A newer name on the shirt is no reason to avoid a firm, but check its licence on the Gambling Commission’s public register, check the minimum odds against the horse you actually intend to back, and compare against the current free bet offers before you open an account.
Every current sign-up offer, with its full terms, is on our free bets and betting offers page.
Exchange or traditional bookmaker?
The honest answer is both, for different jobs.
An exchange often gives you a bigger price because you are betting against other punters rather than a bookmaker’s margin, and it lets you lay a horse as well as back one. Commission is the cost, which is why a 0% commission period is worth more than most free bet offers if you turn over any volume. The drawback is liquidity: outside the major meetings and close to the off, you cannot always get on in size.
A traditional bookmaker gives you Best Odds Guaranteed, extra places, match bets, Tote access and early prices, none of which an exchange market provides. The cost is the margin and the restrictions that arrive if you win consistently.
Plenty of experienced racing punters keep an exchange account and two or three bookmaker accounts, and place each bet wherever it is best served.
What to check before opening an account
Does Best Odds Guaranteed apply to the races you bet? Some firms limit it to certain meetings or exclude ante-post entirely.
When do prices go up? If you want to bet the night before, that narrows the field considerably.
What are the place terms on big fields? Extra places on a 20-runner handicap are worth more than most welcome offers.
Is streaming free without a bet? Several firms require a funded account or a qualifying wager. Our betting apps guide compares how each one performs on mobile.
What will they lay you? Easy to overlook when opening an account, and the thing you will care about most six months later.
Most of these firms run a casino alongside the sportsbook, and the welcome offers are separate. If that interests you, we rate those separately in our UK online casinos guide.
