About Newbury Racecourse

A leading dual-purpose racecourse in the Berkshire countryside, Newbury operates both flat and National Hunt fixtures across the year. The Group 1 Lockinge in May opens the championship flat mile season; the Coral Gold Cup (formerly the Hennessy) in late November is one of the prestigious chases of the winter. Newbury Racecourse is a dual-purpose racecourse hosting both flat and National Hunt fixtures, located at Racecourse Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 7NZ.

FLAGSHIP RACE

Lockinge Stakes, mid-May

The Group 1 Lockinge is run over a mile and forms part of the British Champions Series, attracting some of the greatest flat horses from Europe looking to claim the £200k first prize. Past winners include Frankel (2012), in a career that read: 14 runs, 14 wins.

Meetings & feature races

Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire is one of Britain’s leading dual-purpose tracks, operating both flat and National Hunt fixtures across the year. The headline flat fixture is the Group 1 Lockinge in May; the headline jumps fixture is the Coral Gold Cup (formerly the Hennessy Gold Cup) in late November.

Lockinge Day (mid-May)

The Group 1 Lockinge Stakes is open to four-year-olds and older, and its past winners include some of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time. Frankel won in 2012 to extend his unbeaten record. The mile championship is the curtain-raiser for the British summer Group 1 season alongside the Guineas at Newmarket.

Lockinge Key Trends

If you’re looking for long-odds winners, then it may be wise to avoid the Lockinge. Seven of the last 11 winners have been the favourites, four of those at very skinny odds — Frankel going off at 2/7. As well as the obvious pedigree of the winners, age and course form are key: 11 of the last 14 winners aged four, and seven of the last 11 having run at Newbury before, with six of those having won at the track.

Coral Gold Cup, formerly Hennessy (late November)

One of the most prestigious staying handicap chases of the British jumps season, run over 3m 1.5f. The race has crowned future Cheltenham Gold Cup winners including Bobs Worth (2012) and Native River (2016, 2017). The Coral Gold Cup is the cornerstone of Newbury’s November jumps meeting.

Betfair Super Saturday (early February)

The headline mid-winter jumps fixture at Newbury, featuring the Game Spirit Chase (Grade 2) and the Denman Chase — the latter named in honour of the Paul Nicholls-trained chasing great. Super Saturday is a key Cheltenham Festival pointer for hopefuls in the Champion Chase and Gold Cup divisions.

Course statistics & betting angles

Course profile

Newbury is left-handed, wide and galloping with a long home straight. Rewards genuine stayers and horses ridden patiently with strong finishes.

Course form

Course form deserves real weight, particularly in the autumn jumps fixtures. The wide turf course suits proper gallopers; sharper, more tactical horses can struggle.

Going

Spring and summer Newbury ground typically rides good or good to firm. The November Coral Gold Cup meeting frequently produces soft to heavy conditions.

Top trainers

Aidan O’Brien, John & Thady Gosden and William Haggas dominate the flat Group races. In jumps: Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson and Dan Skelton are the chief operators.

How to watch racing at Newbury

The Lockinge and the other big Newbury races will be live on terrestrial TV with ITV’s team of experts at the track. Racing TV provides comprehensive coverage of every race at the meeting. The Coral Gold Cup is shown on ITV. For race-by-race tips and value picks, the horse.bet UK Racing Predictor publishes daily picks for every Newbury fixture.
