There is no Betfred promo code to worry about. The Betfred sign-up offer is applied to new accounts automatically, so the only things that decide whether you get the £50 in free bets are the deposit method, the odds of your first bet and the clock.

Those three conditions on the joining offer are stricter than they look. Only a debit card registered in your name counts, so prepaid cards and e-wallets are out; the first bet must be £10 or more at Evens or bigger and settle within seven days of registering; and two smaller bets adding up to £10 will not do. Cash out the qualifying bet and you forfeit the offer.

Betfred sign-up offer: how £50 in free bets is paid

Five free bets worth £10 each arrive within ten hours of your qualifying bet settling, win or lose. Three are Sports Free Bets, usable on any sportsbook market including racing; the other two are Acca Free Bets that must go on win-only accumulators of four or more selections. Betfred checks identity before paying, and may ask new customers to confirm by SMS within seven days of the first bet settling. Best Odds Guaranteed and extra places

Back a horse after 08:00 on race day in Britain, Ireland or a selected international race and, if the starting price beats the price you took, Betfred pays the bigger odds. All customers qualify with no opt-in, and no cap on the extra winnings is published. The exclusions are worth knowing: win and each-way bets on Super Extra Place races, Lucky 15s, 31s and 63s, ante-post, Tote, free bet stakes, specials and boosted prices, and races that revert to SP because of non-runners. Extra places are paid at the usual fraction of the odds on each-way bets, which makes them invaluable in big-field handicaps such as the Grand National and at the festival meetings, where a horse running into fifth or sixth can still return a profit.

Bet types and multiples bonuses

Win and each-way singles sit alongside tricasts and the full spread of full-cover multiples: Yankee, Canadian, Heinz and the Lucky 15, 31 and 63. This is where Betfred earns its reputation. BOG or the bonus: choosing your bet

There is a trade-off hidden in those exclusions. A Lucky 15 earns the multiples bonus but sits outside Best Odds Guaranteed, so if you expect your selections to drift, four win singles taken after 08:00 may serve you better than one full-cover bet. If you fancy all four and want the 10% kicker, the Lucky 15 wins out. The same thinking applies to Super Extra Place races: the extra place costs you BOG on that race, which matters most on a horse that could drift in the betting before the off. Neither choice is wrong, but it pays to decide before you bet rather than after the off.

Spending the Betfred sign-up bonus: a worked example

The five free bets behave differently, so it pays to plan where each one goes before they land.

Say you deposit £10 by debit card and put the whole £10 on a 6/4 chance at Newbury. It finishes third. Within ten hours of the result, three £10 Sports Free Bets and two £10 Acca Free Bets appear in your account, and each has seven days to run. You put one Sports Free Bet on a 4/1 winner later that week and receive £40; the £10 free bet stake is not part of the return. The two Acca Free Bets go on win-only four-folds across the Saturday cards or the weekend football, and the last two Sports Free Bets can go on anything in the sportsbook, racing included.

One overlap with Betfred’s racing concessions catches people out. Free bet stakes are excluded from Best Odds Guaranteed, so if you take 5/1 in the morning with a free bet and the horse goes off 8/1, you are paid at 5/1. Second-place free bets on selected races

On selected races Betfred refunds losing win singles, and the win part of each-way bets, as a free bet if your horse finishes runner-up. A second version on selected races extends that to second or third. The runner-up version needs at least five starters and the second-or-third version at least seven. Either way the free bet is capped at £10, paid within 24 hours and removed after seven days if unused.

Lucky bonuses go beyond the Lucky 15

The multiples bonuses also apply to the full-cover bets without singles. A winning Yankee earns 10% extra, a Canadian 20% and a Heinz 25%, matching the Lucky 15, 31 and 63, and all are paid in cash. The all-winners bonus covers horses, greyhounds and virtual racing; the one-winner odds multiplier is for real horse and greyhound racing only, and every selection has to run. Football accumulator bonus and refund

Pre-match football accas of five or more selections on selected markets, with every leg at 1/2 or bigger, earn a cash bonus of between 2.5% and 50% if they all win. Betfred’s long-running goalscorer concession pays double the odds if your first goalscorer scores twice and treble the odds if he completes a hat-trick. A £10 bet at 3/1 would return £40 for the opening goal, £70 at 6/1 for a brace and £100 at 9/1 for a hat-trick. It applies to pre-match singles on the dedicated first goalscorer market in selected matches, and an in-play version runs on the next goalscorer market. Only the 90 minutes count, and winnings are paid in cash.

What sets Betfred apart from rival bookies is the way it bridges the counter and the app. With around 1,100 shops still trading, the same brand and many of the same racing concessions follow you from the high street to your phone, and the accumulator bonuses are among the most generous in the market for multiples punters. Betfred's racing heritage: from a Salford shop to the Tote and the Gold Cup

Fred Done and his brother Peter own the firm that grew from that first Salford shop. Betfred opened its 500th shop in 2005, and the estate passed 1,650 in 2017 after it took on 322 shops sold off in the Ladbrokes Coral merger.

Racing has carried the name for years. Betfred sponsored Haydock's Sprint Cup from 2005 to 2016 and the Cheltenham Gold Cup from 2012 to 2015, and in 2011 it bought the Tote from the government in a £265m deal, along with an exclusive pool-betting licence that ran until 2018. Betfred sold the Tote to Alizeti Capital's UK Tote Group in 2019, so the pools are now run independently, but the multiples bonuses, the tricast top-up and the shop-and-app crossover remain the Done family's stamp on the racing product.

Is Betfred safe and legit?

Betfred’s online sportsbook is operated by Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, which has held UK Gambling Commission licences under account number 39544 since November 2014, covering general betting, pool betting, casino and bingo. In July 2026 Betfred announced a consultation on closing 132 UK shops, leaving around 1,100 open; the online business is unaffected. Betfred and horse racing: the verdict

Betfred’s app listing leads with racing, and the product backs that up. Best Odds Guaranteed runs on every British and Irish race and selected international meetings from 08:00, with no opt-in and no published cap, which already puts it ahead of several bigger rivals. Add Extra Place and Super Extra Place races, a 10% bonus on winning tricasts and generous Lucky 15, 31 and 63 bonuses, and the multiples punter has a natural home.

We give it eight out of ten. Two things hold it back. The welcome offer is sports-wide but demands a debit card deposit and odds of Evens or bigger, and the free bets expire after just seven days. Betfred also publishes less than it might: its streaming rules and standard each-way terms are not easy to find, so we have left them out rather than guess. For BOG without hoops, though, it is among the best.
