Betfair, founded in 2000 by Andrew Black and Edward Wray, runs two products under one roof: the Exchange, where punters back and lay against each other, and a fixed-odds Sportsbook. Since the 2016 merger with Paddy Power it has been part of the group now called Flutter Entertainment.
- Sign-up offers: Sportsbook newcomers who bet €10 at evens get €50 in free bets as five €10 tokens for accas, multiples or bet builders; the Exchange runs its own offer.
- Exchange: Back and lay any horse, set your own price, and pay commission only on net winnings in a market.
- Sportsbook racing: Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish racing from 08:00 for stakes of €25 or more, capped at €1,000 a day.
- Streaming: Irish and GB racing with a €1 Sportsbook bet or a matched Exchange bet of £2 or equivalent.
- Licences: Two GRAI licences: a remote betting licence for the Sportsbook and a betting intermediary licence for the Exchange.
Horse.bet verdict: The only place in this list where you can lay a horse, and the Exchange often beats bookmaker prices on fancied runners. The Sportsbook's €25 threshold for Best Odds Guaranteed is steep for casual punters.

Betfair runs separate welcome offers for its Exchange and its Sportsbook. The Sportsbook offer is open to new customers in the UK and the Republic of Ireland: bet €10 at evens (2.0) or bigger and you receive €50 in free bets, paid as five €10 tokens. Promo Code ZSKAOL is added automatically when you join through the offer banner on betfair.com; it cannot be typed in by hand.
Read the small print before planning a racing bet around it. The five tokens can only be used on bet builders, accumulators or multiples, not on a straight win single, and they last 30 days from the day they land. Only deposits by Pay by Bank, Apple Pay or debit card qualify, the qualifying bet must be placed within 30 days of opening the account, and multi-line bets such as Trixies, Patents, Yankees and Lucky 15s do not count as the qualifying bet. The Exchange offer carries its own terms.
Whichever product you start with, the general rules on Irish accounts apply: credit cards cannot be used to deposit or withdraw, and funds paid in through third-party providers can take a few days to reach the protected customer account.

Betfair Exchange in Ireland: backing, laying and commission
On the Exchange you are not betting against Betfair. You are matched with another customer who holds the opposite view, and Betfair takes a commission on net winnings in each market. Losing bets carry no commission. The formula is net winnings multiplied by the Market Base Rate for where you live, less any discount earned through Betfair Points, or the rate of your chosen package if you opt into My Betfair Rewards.
Laying is the feature that sets the Exchange apart. If you think a short-priced favourite at Leopardstown will be beaten, you can lay it, acting as the bookmaker, and win the backer's stake if it loses. Your liability is the backer's potential winnings, so laying a 4/1 shot for €10 risks €40.
For Irish customers the Exchange is provided by Betfair International plc, which holds a GRAI betting intermediary licence for customers in the Republic of Ireland.
Betfair SP
Betfair Starting Price is calculated at the off by matching all the money requested at SP by backers and layers, along with unmatched Exchange bets, with no margin built in. Betfair shows a projected SP before the race. It is available on desktop rather than the app, and it is not offered on ante-post markets. Betfair argues it gives a fairer price than a bookmaker SP, though its help centre does not publish figures to prove it.
Betfair horse racing: Exchange prices and Sportsbook BOG on Irish meetings
Racing is the Exchange's natural home. Markets on Irish and British meetings fill up through the morning, and on the big festival days at Cheltenham, Punchestown and Galway the liquidity is deep enough to trade in and out of a position before the off.
The Exchange is not just for win betting. Place markets let you back or lay a horse to finish in the frame, and comparing those prices with a bookmaker's each-way terms is a useful habit before a big handicap at Galway or the Punchestown Festival.
The Sportsbook offers the more familiar experience of fixed-odds win and each-way betting, with the concessions listed below. Our Irish horse racing betting hub compares them with the other major books.
Best Odds Guaranteed on the Sportsbook
Sportsbook singles and multiples on UK and Irish horse racing, placed from 08:00 on race day, are paid at the starting price if it is bigger than the price taken. No opt-in is needed. The catch is the threshold: the total stake must be €25 or more, and extra payments are capped at €1,000 per customer per day. Exchange bets, free bets, Odds Boost selections and Bet Boost token bets are excluded, as are greyhounds and international racing.
Streaming Irish racing
Live pictures of Irish and GB racing are unlocked by a Sportsbook bet of €1 on the race, or 50 cent each way, or by a matched Exchange bet of £2 or the equivalent on that day's race market. Ante-post and special bets do not qualify. Racing UK content is available in the Republic of Ireland. Betfair warns that streams usually run a few seconds behind the live action, which matters if you trade in running.
Sportsbook racing features
The app lists Bet Boost tokens, Super Boosts and Second Chance tokens among the Sportsbook features, alongside Best Odds Guaranteed. Second Chance and Ghost Leg tokens also appear in the app; each carries its own terms and limits, shown when the token is credited.
Betfair sports betting beyond racing
Both products cover football, tennis, cricket, golf, darts and politics, and the Exchange takes in-play bets on the bigger football fixtures. The Sportsbook adds Safe Sub, which moves a player bet to the substitute, a 90-minute payout on football and Weekly Rewards.
For punters who bet on a few sports, the combination is attractive: Exchange prices when they are better, Sportsbook boosts and tokens when they are not, all from one wallet.
Betfair offers for existing customers: rewards, boosts and tokens
Betfair's loyalty offers split along the same line as its products. On the Exchange, My Betfair Rewards lets you choose a package that sets your commission rate, while Betfair Points earned from wins and losses reduce commission through a discount rate. On the Sportsbook, the app lists Weekly Rewards, Bet Boost tokens, Super Boosts, Second Chance and Ghost Leg tokens.
Two rules are worth remembering. Bets placed with tokens or on boosted selections do not count for Sportsbook Best Odds Guaranteed, and promotions are restricted to customers in the UK and Ireland. Each token shows its own expiry and minimum odds when it lands in your account, so check them before planning a bet around a festival card.
Betfair app, deposits and withdrawals for Irish customers
The Betfair Sports Betting app combines the Exchange and the Sportsbook and holds 4.6 stars from around 5,200 ratings on the Irish App Store. It handles backing, laying and trading as well as fixed-odds betting, though Betfair SP bets need the desktop site.
Under Betfair's terms, credit cards are not accepted for deposits or withdrawals from the Republic of Ireland, in line with the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. Debit cards, bank transfer and the other methods shown after login are available. Withdrawals are generally paid back to the account the money came from.
Is Betfair licensed in Ireland?
Yes, twice over. Betfair Sportsbook bets placed by Irish customers are struck with PPB Counterparty Services Limited, licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland under remote betting licence GRAI-1003-RB-26-0001, the same entity that runs Paddy Power's online sportsbook. The Exchange is provided by Betfair International plc under GRAI betting intermediary registration GRAI-1074-RBI-26-0001. Disputes involving Irish residents fall under Irish law.
Licensees must verify age, pay winnings promptly, refuse credit cards and close accounts on request. Use the limits in your account, and contact the Gambling Care helpline on 1800 936 725 if betting is causing problems.

Betfair pros and cons
What we like
- Lay betting and trading on the Exchange
- Betfair SP with no built-in margin
- Streaming from a €1 Sportsbook bet
- No opt-in needed for Sportsbook BOG
What could be better
- BOG only on Sportsbook stakes of €25 or more
- Exchange commission on net winnings
- Betfair SP not available in the app
Our verdict on Betfair in Ireland
Betfair belongs in every serious racing punter's set of accounts, if only to check the Exchange price before backing with a bookmaker. Laying, trading and Betfair SP offer things no fixed-odds firm can.
The Sportsbook is solid but not a reason to join on its own; the €25 floor on Best Odds Guaranteed is high. For BOG on any stake, see our bet365 Ireland review; for the sister brand's racing extras, read our Paddy Power review.
FAQs
What is the Betfair sign up offer in Ireland?
On the Sportsbook, new customers in the Republic of Ireland can bet €10 at evens (2.0) or bigger and get €50 in free bets, paid as five €10 tokens for bet builders, accumulators or multiples and valid for 30 days. Promo Code ZSKAOL is applied automatically through the offer banner. The Exchange has a separate welcome offer.
Can I use the Betfair welcome free bets on horse racing?
Only inside a bet builder, accumulator or multiple. The five €10 tokens from the Sportsbook welcome offer cannot be used on single bets, so a straight win bet on one horse does not qualify.
Is Betfair Exchange legal in Ireland?
Yes. Betfair International plc is regulated by the GRAI for Exchange customers in the Republic of Ireland under registration GRAI-1074-RBI-26-0001.
How much commission does Betfair charge?
Commission is a percentage of net winnings in a market, set by the Market Base Rate for your location and reduced by any discount from Betfair Points. Losing bets pay no commission.
Does Betfair have Best Odds Guaranteed?
On the Sportsbook, for UK and Irish racing bets of €25 or more placed from 08:00 on race day, capped at €1,000 a day. Exchange bets are not covered.
How do I watch Irish racing on Betfair?
Place a Sportsbook bet of €1 (or 50 cent each way) on the race, or have a matched Exchange bet of £2 or equivalent on the race market.
What is Betfair SP?
A starting price calculated from backers' and layers' money at the off, with no margin built in. It is available on desktop, not in the app.
Can I use a credit card on Betfair in Ireland?
No. Betfair's terms state credit cards are not accepted for deposits or withdrawals from the Republic of Ireland.
Can I lay a horse in Ireland?
Yes, on the Betfair Exchange. Laying means you win the backer's stake if the horse loses, and your liability is the backer's potential winnings, so laying a 4/1 shot for €10 risks €40.
Are Betfair and Paddy Power the same company?
Both are part of Flutter Entertainment, and Betfair's Sportsbook and Paddy Power's online sportsbook share the same licensed entity, PPB Counterparty Services Limited.
