About Sandown Park Racecourse

Tucked between Esher and Walton-on-Thames, Sandown Park is the only dual-purpose Grade 1 racecourse within the M25. Sandown Park Racecourse is a dual-purpose racecourse hosting both flat and National Hunt fixtures, located at Portsmouth Road, Esher, Surrey, KT10 9AJ.

FLAGSHIP MEETING

Coral-Eclipse Day, early July

Named after the legendary 18th century racehorse Eclipse, the Coral-Eclipse is a Group 1 over 1m 2f that was for many years Britain’s richest race. The first meeting of the year between three-year-olds and their elders — a generational clash that often defines the middle-distance hierarchy for the rest of the summer.

Meetings & feature races

Sandown Park has staged racing since 1875 and operates both flat and National Hunt cards across the year, making it one of only a handful of British racecourses to do so at the top level. The right-handed track has an uphill finish that punishes any horse that has been ridden too freely.

Coral-Eclipse Stakes (first Saturday in July)

Classic winners have graced the race throughout its history. Enable won the 2019 Eclipse, two years after her Oaks success. Sea The Stars (2009), Mtoto (1987 and 1988) and Pebbles (1985) are among the modern greats to have lifted the trophy. The 1m 1f 209y trip falls perfectly between Royal Ascot’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the King George at Ascot.

bet365 Tingle Creek Chase (first Saturday in December)

The most important two-mile chase outside Cheltenham’s Champion Chase, the Tingle Creek is the unofficial mid-season championship for top-class two-mile chasers. Named after the 1970s chasing star Tingle Creek, the race regularly produces high-quality speed-chase action and serves as a major pointer to the spring championship.

bet365 Gold Cup (late April)

The traditional season-closer for British National Hunt racing, the bet365 Gold Cup (formerly the Whitbread) is run on Sandown’s long 3m4f chase course. Famed for huge fields and big-priced winners, it’s a handicap that rewards stamina, jumping and a touch of luck in running.

Course statistics & betting angles

Uphill finish

Sandown’s defining feature. Punishing climb to the line favours travellers who quicken late, hurts horses ridden too freely.

Going

Summer Sandown is often good to firm; winter National Hunt frequently sees heavy ground. Mud-loving chasers come into their own at Tingle Creek.

Course form

Sandown specialists exist in both codes — the uphill finish suits particular types. Course form deserves more weight here than at many tracks.

Top trainers

Sir Michael Stoute, John & Thady Gosden and Aidan O’Brien on the flat. Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls in jumps.

How to watch racing at Sandown Park

ITV provides live terrestrial coverage of the Coral-Eclipse, the Tingle Creek and the April Gold Cup. Racing TV covers every Sandown card. For race-by-race tips and probabilistic analysis, the horse.bet UK Racing Predictor publishes picks and value plays for every Sandown card.
