All-Weather Championships Finals Day (Good Friday)
The culmination of the all-weather season has been celebrated since 2014, with the best runners on synthetic surfaces battling it out for a prize pot totalling more than £1 million. Races start at six furlongs and extend up to two miles, the most valuable being the one-mile-two-furlong Middle-Distance Championship Conditions Stakes. The first all-weather UK race was staged on the Equitrack at Lingfield in 1989, with the Fibresand track at Southwell opening at the same time. In 2009, Matsunosuke was rated as the UK’s best ever all-weather horse.
Middle-Distance Championship Key Trends
The middle-distance feature is very much a race for those at the top of the betting, with six of the last seven winners being favourites. The draw and age of the horse also appear crucial — all the last seven winners were drawn in stall four or lower, and all were aged between four and six.
Derby Trial Day (early May)
The Lingfield Derby Trial is one of the most reliable Derby pointers run in Britain. The Group 3 over 1m 3.5f on the turf is staged in early May and has produced multiple Derby winners including High-Rise (1998), Authorized (2007), Pour Moi (2011) and Anthony Van Dyck (2019). A must-watch for Derby ante-post backers.
