The Group 1 Sprint Cup is the biggest flat race of the season at the Merseyside track — a six-furlong test for the speedsters of Britain and Ireland. British-trained horses have dominated recent renewals, with the notable exception of Gordon Lord Byron’s 2013 win for Irish handler Tom Hogan.
Meetings & feature races

The jumps season highlight is the Betfair Chase in November — the opening leg of the Jockey Club Chase Triple Crown.
Sprint Cup (early September)
The Group 1 Sprint Cup over six furlongs has been a fixture of the British Champions Series and one of the key sprint targets of the late-summer season. The race has been very much in the grip of British-trained horses over recent years, with the one notable exception being Gordon Lord Byron’s success in 2013, the Tom Hogan-trained five-year-old beating Slade Power to make it an Irish one-two.
Sprint Cup Key Trends
Six of the last eight Sprint Cup winners have been in the first three in the betting, with three of the last five favourites triumphing. Four of the last 12 winners won at Haydock before the Sprint Cup, and ten out of the last 12 winners had at least three wins over six furlongs — specialist sprint form is essential.
Betfair Chase (mid-November)
The opening leg of the Jockey Club Chase Triple Crown and one of the season’s richest staying chases. The Grade 1 over 3 miles ½ furlong was won three times by Bristol De Mai (2017, 2018, 2020), establishing him as a Haydock specialist. Native River won in 2016 and Kauto Star won four times between 2006 and 2011.
Old Newton Cup (July)
One of the year’s most competitive 1m 4f handicaps and traditionally one of the highlights of the summer flat-season programme at Haydock. Big fields and bigger-priced winners.

Course statistics & betting angles
Haydock is left-handed with a long galloping home straight. Suits horses ridden patiently with strong finishes; punishes any sprinter forced into the lead too early.
Autumn Haydock ground is often soft to heavy. The Betfair Chase typically rides on testing ground and rewards mud-loving stayers.
Bristol De Mai’s three wins in the Betfair Chase underline how much course form matters at Haydock. Some chasers simply prefer the surface and the camber.
Karl Burke, William Haggas and David O’Meara dominate the flat fixtures. In jumps: Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson, Dan Skelton and Venetia Williams are all competitive.
