FLAGSHIP MEETING

Chester May Festival, early May

Three days of championship flat racing on the Roodee. The Chester Cup is the most valuable, the Chester Vase is a key Derby trial, and the Cheshire Oaks is one of the strongest Oaks pointers of the year. Atmospheric, intimate and unlike anywhere else in British racing.

Meetings & feature races

The Roodee at Chester is the oldest racecourse still in use in Britain, hosting racing since 1539. The tight, left-handed circular track creates one of the sport’s most distinctive betting puzzles. The three-day May Festival is the year’s headline meeting.

Chester May Festival (early May)

The May meeting is the season highlight for the course situated on the border between England and Wales, with the Chester Cup, Chester Vase, and the Cheshire Oaks three of the big races on the three-day card. The Chester Cup is the most valuable, run since 1824, and one that has proved popular with Irish raiders over recent years, with Aidan O’Brien and Dermot Weld among the trainers to send their horses across the Irish Sea.

Chester Cup Key Trends

Despite the race being run over two miles and two furlongs the draw is seen as key, with the lower the better, although the last two winners have been drawn in double figures. The tight track also favours horses with form at the venue, and jockey form at Chester is also something to bear in mind when making your selection. Favourites in the Chester Cup have a miserable record, with just one winner in the last 16 runnings. Look at horses further down the betting with form over two miles and further — seven of the last nine winners were returned at odds in double figures.

Chester Vase & Cheshire Oaks

Two of the most reliable classics pointers run anywhere in Britain. The Chester Vase has produced multiple Derby winners including Ruler of the World (2013) and Wings of Eagles (2017), both for Aidan O’Brien. The Cheshire Oaks is a key Oaks trial — Forever Together (2018) and Snowfall (2021) both went on to claim the Epsom classic.

Course statistics & betting angles

Tight bends

Chester’s circular track is the tightest in Britain. Horses must travel sweetly and lay handy throughout. Hold-up tactics rarely succeed; positional rides win races.

Course form

Course-specialist horses dominate. The unique camber and the bend angles suit particular types; first-time Chester runners often struggle even when in form.

Top jockeys

Jockey form at Chester matters more than at most courses. Ryan Moore and William Buick are exceptional around the Roodee; lesser-known jockeys without course experience are routinely beaten.

Going

Roodee ground is well watered in summer and typically rides good or good to firm. May Festival can see softer ground after April rain.

How to watch racing at Chester

ITV have their team of presenters at Chester for all three days of the May Festival, with the big races free to air. Racing TV provides coverage of every race on every Chester card, as well as live analysis from the track. For race-by-race tips and value picks, the horse.bet UK Racing Predictor publishes daily picks for every Chester fixture.

Visiting Chester

Chester Racecourse sits inside the city walls in central Chester — one of the most unusual settings in British sport. Chester railway station is a 15-minute walk from the course with regular services from Liverpool, Manchester and London Euston (around 2 hours via Crewe). On-street parking near the course is limited on race days; the park-and-ride from Wrexham Road is the easiest option.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Chester May Festival?

The May Festival runs over three days in early May each year, from Wednesday to Friday. The Chester Cup is on Friday; the Chester Vase and Cheshire Oaks fall on Wednesday and Thursday.

What is the Roodee?

“The Roodee” is the historic name for Chester’s racecourse, derived from Old English for the island where a cross (rood) stood. The course has hosted racing since 1539, making it the oldest still in use in Britain.

Why are Chester course winners so important?

The track’s tight bends and camber are unique. Horses that have already proven they handle the Roodee hold a significant edge over first-timers, regardless of class.

Is the Chester Vase a good Derby trial?

Yes — one of the best. Multiple Derby winners have come through the Vase including Ruler of the World, Wings of Eagles and Kris Kin.

Where can I find Chester tips?

The horse.bet UK Racing Predictor publishes Chester picks the morning of racing, with full-field probability ratings and value plays for every race on the card.
