Guineas Weekend Key Betting Trends
The first of the season’s classics are run over the Guineas weekend, kicking off with the 2000 Guineas, open to three-year-old fillies and mares, before the 1000 Guineas 24 hours later, open to fillies only. The mile-long races were first run in the early part of the 19th century, the fillies’ race five years younger, with the race names based on the winning prize – a guinea equivalent to 21 shillings (£1.05). The 2000 Guineas can act as a trial for the Derby – the last horse to win both was Camelot in 2012 – whereas the 1000 Guineas can be a trial for the Oaks, with Love successful in both in 2020.
All the entrants in both races will boast a degree of quality but in the 2000 Guineas, 11 of the last 12 winners have at least one Group One success before lining up at Newmarket, and ten of the last 12 won their last race. In the 1000 Guineas course form should be checked, with nine of the last 12 winners having already had a run at Newmarket, and four of those boasting previous wins at the track. Favourites’ success rate is mixed with five of the last 11 winning the 2000 Guineas, and just one of the last 11 winning the 1000 Guineas.
A range of tipsters offer some expert guidance to the first classics of the season at the Racing Post, with in-depth analysis and useful pointers. Also, check out Timeform for their analysts’ verdict on every race on the Newmarket card.
ITV offer coverage of the 1000 and 2000 Guineas as well as the other big races on the card, with Racing TV providing extensive live racing from Newmarket and analysis from their team at the track.
