Epsom Derby Key Betting Trends
Two classics at one meeting with the Oaks (fillies) on the Friday a warm-up act for the most classic of classics, the Derby, on the Saturday. Both are run over one-mile-four-furlongs with, somewhat surprisingly, the Oaks predating the Derby with the first running in 1779. The Derby, however, is seen as the epitome of horse racing and is Britain’s richest race with a purse totalling more than £1.125million. The glory of the race is mixed with tragedy, however, with the 1913 running infamous for the death of suffragette Emily Davison who ran in front of King George V’s horse, Anmer, and was struck by the animal before dying four days later.
Irish raider Aidan O’Brien trained six of the last ten Derby winners and six of the last ten Oaks winners. In the Oaks, all of the last 12 winners had run in the 33 days before Epsom and ten of those had at least placed on that run. The Derby has been a tougher betting race recently, with four of the last five winners going off at double figure odds, one at 40/1, with ten of the last 12 winners drawn in stall seven or higher.
It’s one of ITV’s biggest outside broadcasts so they’ll have the big races live from Epsom on the Friday and Saturday with Racing TV offering comprehensive coverage of all the races at the meeting.
